COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Wake Forest's Danny Wenzel scored his first goal of the season, but No. 3 Maryland got a goal each from three different players as the Terrapins defeated the Deacs 3-1 on Saturday night at Ludwig Field.

The Demon Deacons are now 5-7-2 on the season and 3-2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Maryland runs its winning streak to seven games, improving to 11-2-1 and 5-1-1 in league play.

Maryland jumped out to a 2-0 lead after goals from Paul Torres in the 30th minute and Casey Townsend in the 63rd minute. Wake Forest got a goal closer in the 68th minute on Wenzel's goal, but Maryland was able to get its two-goal lead back in the 83rd minute on a score from Matt Kassel.

Wenzel, a defender from Federal Way, Wash., found the back of the net for the first time on the season and the second time in his career. Ben Newnam assisted on the goal for his first assist of the season.

Kassel and Townsend each scored their sixth goals of the season for the Terrapins, while Torres recorded his third goal of the season. Jason Herrick assisted on the first Maryland goal, while Taylor Kemp had the assist on the second goal.

Akira Fitzgerald made six saves and allowed three goals to fall to 5-7-2 on the year for Wake Forest, while Maryland keeper Zac MacMath gave up one goal and made two saves to improve his record to 11-2-1.

Maryland held a 22-7 edge in shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on frame. The Terps attempted 13 corner kicks, compared to one corner kick opportunity for the Deacs.

Maryland grabbed the lead with a goal in the 30th minute from Torres. Herrick had the initial shot that was saved by Fitzgerald, but the rebound came to Torres, who scored from 14 yards out into the right side of the net to put the Terps in front 1-0.

Wake Forest didn't attempt its first shot of the match until the 35th minute. Chris Duvall had an attempt from the right side of the 18-yard box that required a diving save by MacMath.

The Terrapins had the first chance of the second half with 32 minutes left in the match. Kemp played a ball from the left flank and found Townsend making a run down the right side of the penalty area. Townsend got a head on the ball and sent it just high of the crossbar.

Maryland doubled its lead in the 63rd minute on a goal by Townsend. Kemp played a ball in from the left flank that Townsend chested down inside the six-yard box. Townsend was able to get a shot off that Fitzgerald got a hand on, but the ball still trickled over the goal line to put the Terps in front 2-0.

Wake Forest answered back just more than four minutes later on Wenzel's first goal of the season. Newnam played a corner kick from the right and Wenzel scored from 12 yards out to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Terrapins had a chance to regain a two-goal advantage in the 72nd minute after Wake Forest was called for a foul inside the 18-yard box leading to a penalty kick. Kassel took the penalty kick, looking for the left side of the goal, but Fitzgerald dove and got a hand on the ball for the save to keep the Terrapin lead at one.

The Deacs had a good free kick opportunity in the 75th minute after a foul was called 25 yards away from goal. Anthony Arena's free kick was blocked by the wall and the deflection went to Jared Watts, who had a shot from distance that went high and wide of the goal.

Maryland closed the scoring in the 83rd minute on a free kick goal. Kassel's free kick from 30 yards out in the middle of the field found the upper left corner of the goal to put the Terrapins in front 3-1.

Wake Forest returns to the field on Tuesday, traveling to face Elon. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
