WILMINGTON, NC - On a very tough day for scoring, the No. 15 Wake Forest women's golf team carded a round of 305 and are tied for ninth after the opening round of the Landfall Tradition at the Landfall Country Club.
Individually, three Demon Deacons - Cheyenne Woods, Michelle Shin and Olafia Kristinsdottir - all carded rounds of 3-over 75 and are tied for 27th. The 305 was the Deacs' highest round of the year and has them in a tie with ACC-foe Virginia at 17-over par.
"It was just one of those days when we were all a little bit off," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "It's okay when one or two players are struggling and the others can pick them up but we all struggled today. The course was setup very tough though. Where the pins were located, if you missed the green by just a little bit, you were really penalized. We got done early and had a good practice session this afternoon and I think we'll be ready to go tomorrow."
Duke and Texas both turned in strong rounds of 3-over 291 and lead the tournament by two shots over North Carolina and three shots over UCLA.
Just seven players broke par on a day when the scoring average was over 77.16. A trio of ACC players are tied at the top as Duke's Kim Donovan, NC State's Caroline Ellington and UNC's Katherine Perry all shot 2-under 70 and lead by one shot over four players.
For the Deacons, Kristinsdottir led the way with a total of four birdies on Friday. She stuck-it to two feet and made birdie at the opening hole and then hit the pin on the par-3 second. The Iceland native, made a total of three birdies on the front nine and went out in 1-under 35. But she would make three bogeys and a double-bogey on the back to come home in 40. Her round of 3-over 75 was her third-best round of the year.
"Olafia came out of the gate well and made some putts on the front nine," Dailey said. "I think she's beginning to get some confidence. Being a freshman and juggling everything that she has this first semester, I think she is starting to settle in pretty well."
Woods and Shin each made just one birdie in their rounds of 75. For Shin, it was just her fourth round this season not at par or better.
Neither seniors Natalie Sheary or Allie Bodemann recorded a birdie in their opening rounds of 80 and 83. Sheary is currently in a tie for 67th at 8-over while Bodemann is tied for 80th at 11-over.
The Deacons will look to turn it around on Saturday as they will be in the final wave off the tenth tee beginning at 10:10 am. Wake is paired with host UNC Wilmington and Ohio State.
