WILMINGTON, NC - The No. 15 Wake Forest women's golf team finished its fall slate with a final round 302 at the Landfall Tradition to finish eighth in the 18-team field. Individually, sophomore Michelle Shin finished tied for 11th at 6-over par.
The Demon Deacons followed opening rounds of 305 and 300 with a 302 on Sunday to finish the event at 43-over par. That was their highest 54-hole score of the fall.
"It was just one of those tournaments where we just didn't have it," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "Everyone was just a little off and when you're playing a tough golf course, the mistakes are magnified. There wasn't many birdies out there today. One thing this weekend did show us was exactly what we need to work on over the winter. I think the students are ready for some time off and have a chance to work on their game."
Wake wasn't the only team to struggle on Sunday as 36-hole leader Duke finished with a round of 316, which opened the door for UCLA to jump in and take the tournament title at 16-over par. The Bruins fired a final round 300 and won by five shots over North Carolina.
In the individual race, Virginia's Brittany Altomare and UCLA's Tiffany Lua shared medalist honors at 2-under par. The duo was the only two players in the 90-player field to break par this weekend.
Shin started her final round with a birdie on the first hole and finished with a total of four birdies in her round of 1-over 73. She finished the tournament at a team-best 6-over par and tied for 11th.
"Michelle didn't have her best game this weekend but she really grinded her way through the round," said Dailey. "I was really proud of her. She kept fighting and scored well despite struggling with her swing."
Senior Natalie Sheary opened the tournament with an uncharacteristic round of 8-over 80 but rebounded to post scores of 74 and 72 and finish tied for 26th at 10-over par. She started the final round with two birdies and three bogeys in the first five holes. The West Hartford, Conn., native remained 1-over through 13 holes before she countered a bogey on No. 3 with an eagle on the par-5 fourth to get back to even for the day.
Junior Cheyenne Woods made two birdies on Sunday but she also made two double-bogeys and would finish with a round of 3-over 75. Woods finished the tournament at 9-over par and tied for 22nd.
Freshman Olafia Kristinsdottir posted a final round 82 while senior Allie Bodemann finished with an 84.
The Deacons have concluded the fall portion of their schedule and will be off until they head to California on Feb. 14, for the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.
