RALEIGH, NC - Behind yet another solid showing from Lee Bedford and Evan Beck, the Wake Forest men's golf team finished third at the NC State Wolfpack Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. Bedford fired a final round 67 to finish in second place while Beck finished in a tie for third.

The Demon Deacons carded the second-best round of the day on a windy Tuesday in Raleigh, posting a 4-over 288. Wake finished the 54-hole event at 3-over par. Host NC State put its local knowledge to good use in the final round, and would card a 1-under 283 to win the event by four shots over ACC-rival Duke.

"We got off to a slow start on Monday morning and we were probably one round away today from being right there," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "But we have some young guys in there that don't have a lot of experience and that consistency will come with time. I'm really encouraged by what I'm seeing from his team so I think as the year goes on, we're going to be pretty good."

Wake has gotten off to a good start so far this fall. The Deacs finished second at the each of the first two events and now added a third-place finish. In all, four of Wake's nine rounds this season have been under-par.

Bedford, who was playing near his hometown of Cary, NC, fired the low-round of the day on Tuesday with a 4-under 67. He started with a bogey at the par-4 third but then made six birdies in the final 15 holes. The 67 was his second-lowest round of the year and his sixth round at par or better.

The junior All-American opened the tournament with a 2-over 73 but posted rounds of 68-67 to finish at 5-under par, which was just one-shot behind NC State freshman Albin Choi. Choi had a commanding lead most of the day but bogeyed three of his final seven holes to make things interesting.

Bedford has first, second and seventh in the three events this year and has been in the top-10 in seven of his last 10 tournaments.

Beck continued his hot start to the season with yet another under-par round. Like Bedford, he started with a 73 on Monday morning but he rebounded with a 67 in the afternoon and a battled-back from a slow start on Tuesday to post a 1-under 70. He finished the tournament in a tie for third at 3-under par.

Beck's 73 on Monday was his only round this season not at par or better. He and Bedford both lead the team with identical 69.9 scoring averages and both have made a total of 34 birdies on the year.

Senior Justin Bryant made just two birdies in 36 holes on Monday and was 7-over par coming into the final round. But the St. Louis, Mo., native battled all day on Tuesday, making four birdies in a round of even-par 71. He helped the Deacs, who started the day in fourth place, move past ACC-rival Maryland into third place. Bryant finished the tournament tied for 29th.

Sophomore Charlie Harrison started with two strong rounds of 70 and 71 but struggled a bit on Tuesday. He didn't make his first birdie until the 17th hole and would end-up with a final round 80. Harrison finished the event one-shot behind Bryant at 8-over par and tied for 32nd.

Freshman John Varol helped the Deacons stay near the top of the board Monday afternoon with an even-par 71 but like Harrison, he would card an 80 on Tuesday. Junior Daniel Meggs, who was playing as an individual, finished off his week with a 79. Varol ended the event in a tie for 64th while Meggs was in a tie for 73rd.

The Deacons will now have a little more than a week off before returning to action at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges Country Club in Johnson City, Tenn. The first round of the 54-hole event is set for Friday, Oct. 15, with the final round coming on Sunday, Oct. 17.
