Head Coaches Bracket | Assistant Coaches Bracket
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest head coach Jeff Bzdelik and assistant coach Rusty LaRue both advanced to the second round of CollegeInsider.com's "Shots From the Heart" tournament, which is a free throw shooting contest designed to raise awareness for the growing problem of heart disease and to honor the memory of the late Skip Prosser.
Bzdelik, competing in the head coaches tournament, and LaRue, competing in the assistant coaches tournament, each advanced to the round of 32 in their respective brackets. The second round will take place during the month of December.
In each round, a participating coach must shoot 25 free throws with a member of their respective athletic departments as a witness to record the total number of points earned. Coaches do not actually compete against each other on the same court.
The first 20 shots earn a single point, shots 21-24 earn two points, and the final shot earns three points. The coach with the highest number of points in the matchup advances to the next round.
Bzdelik made all 25 of his free throws for a perfect score of 31 points. He defeated Colorado State's Tim Miles, who made 23 of 25 attempts for 29 points. Bzdelik will now face Xavier's Chris Mack in the second round. Mack went 20-of-25 for a total of 25 first-round points.
LaRue went 24-of-25, missing his final attempt worth three points, to finish with 28 points. He handily defeated Davidson's Jim Fox, who was 16-of-25 for just 18 points. LaRue will now face Holy Cross' Dan Englestad, who made 24 of 25 attempts for 30 points in the first round.
The tournament began on November 15 and features one round per month leading up to the 2011 Final Four in Houston, where the final will take place.
