WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Al'Lonzo Coleman scored 20 points and Khalid Mutakabbir made the game-winning layup with eight seconds remaining as Presbyterian nipped Wake Forest 66-64 Tuesday evening at the Joel Coliseum.
The Blue Hose (6-6) had led by as many as many as 14 points in the second half, but the Demon Deacons (6-6) staged a furious comeback, capped off by a J.T. Terrell three-pointer that tied the game at 64-64 with 43 seconds to play. After Mutakabbir gave Presbyterian the lead, the Blue Hose, who had two fouls to give, fouled twice on the final Wake Forest possession, leaving the Demon Deacons without enough time to get a final shot off.
Gary Clark led Wake Forest with 14 points, with Travis McKie close behind with 12 points and nine rebounds. J.T. Terrell notched 11 points, all coming in the second half, and C.J. Harris chipped in 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
PC shot 50 percent (24-of-48) from the field, 50 percent (8-of-16) from behind the arc and a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line. The Blue Hose are the first team to go perfect from the charity stripe with at least 10 attempts against Wake Forest since Florida State went 11-of-11 from the line against the Deacs in 2003. The Demon Deacons shot 46 percent (26-of-57) from the field, but went only 2-of-10 from distance, their fewest three-pointers made of the season.
Wake Forest held a 32-25 advantage on the boards and the Deacons' reserves outscored the Presbyterian bench 23-3.
Wake Forest got out of the gates quickly, hitting four of its first six shots to take an early 8-6 lead. After Harris hit a bucket to put the Deacons ahead at the 16:21 mark, Presbyterian responded by going on an 8-0 run which proved to be the only points scored by either team over the next five minutes.
Nikita Mescheriakov snapped the Deacons' scoreless streak with a pair of free throws at the 11:02 mark, but the Blue Hose continued to control the game by pushing its run to 16-6 for a 22-14 lead with 7:28 left in the half.
Wake Forest fought back by using an 8-3 run to pull within three, 25-22, at the 3:29 mark. Carson Desrosiers fueled the run, scoring four of the eight points during the stretch.
Presbyterian closed the period by outscoring Wake, 11-4, over the final three minutes to take a 36-26 advantage to the locker room.
The Blue Hose pushed their lead to as much as 14 early in the second half. With Presbyterian holding a 57-44 advantage at the 10:31 mark, Wake Forest went on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to pull within two at 57-55. McKie and Ari Stewart combined for nine points during the run.
Wake's 11-0 run spurred a longer stretch that saw the Deacons outscore the Blue Hose 20-7 to tie the game at 64 apiece. Terrell's 3-pointer with 41 seconds remaining knotted the score for the Deacons.
However, Mutakabbir put in a layup with eight seconds on the board to win the game for the visitors.
The Blue Hose ate up the clock by fouling the Deacons twice on the next possession. Harris's failed layup attempt did not get off before the final buzzer.
Wake Forest will have a seven-day break for the holidays before returning to action on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Richmond. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Robbins Center. The Deacons return home to host Gonzaga on Sunday, Jan. 2, at 1 p.m.
