Josh Howard had a strong week for the Dallas Mavericks. He returned to the starting five after a 19-point performance on 9-of-15 from the floor against Golden State last Wednesday. Howard totaled 11 points and six rebounds on Friday, followed by his season-best 25 points on Monday. At Golden State, he scored 25 points off the bench in the Mavs' 127-117 win. Howard concluded the week with 14 points and three rebounds in last night's loss at Denver. Dallas now stands at 32-20 and fourth in the Western Conference standings.
Tim Duncan added three double-doubles in four away games for the San Antonio Spurs this week. He netted his highest point total of the week with 22 last Wednesday to go with 13 boards as the Spurs topped Sacramento, 115-113. He recorded 16 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks at Los Angeles on Monday night. At Portland, he had 15 points, 12 boards, four assists, two steals and two blocks in a three-point loss. On Saturday, Duncan scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds as the Spurs cruised to a 17-point win over the Clippers. The Spurs (29-21) are two games behind Dallas and currently are seventh in the West.
On Sunday, Feb. 14, Duncan is slated to start the 2010 NBA All-Star Game in Dallas. TNT will air the game beginning at 8 p.m. It will be Duncan's 12th All-Star appearance.
Chris Paul, who was replaced by Denver's Chauncey Billups as a Western Conference All-Star reserve due to injury, remained sidelined for the New Orleans Hornets this week. Paul had surgery on his knee and is expected to miss four to six weeks.
The Hornets lost three without Paul in the lineup this week, but teammate Darius Songaila scored in double figures twice in four games. He had 10 points on Monday night at Orlando and 10 on Friday against Philadelphia. Songaila also added five boards against the Magic. Last Wednesday, he bested his season-high assist mark with five against Oklahoma City, while adding four points. On Saturday, Songaila scored two points, grabbed five boards and added two helpers as the Hornets pulled off a five-point win against the Bobcats. New Orleans is 27-25 for the year and five games back in the Southwest Division.
