BLACKSBURG, Va. - For the second time this season, sophomore Michelle Lange set the pole vault school record as the Wake Forest track & field teams wrapped-up action at the Virginia Tech Challenge Saturday afternoon.
The meet was the final tune-up for the Demon Deacons before next weekend's ACC Indoor Championships which will be right back in Blacksburg, Va.
Lange cleared 11-9.75 on her second attempt and then vaulted a school-record 12-3.50, clearing the height on her first attempt. She broke her previous school-record of 12-2.50 which she set back on Feb. 5, at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet. Lange would go on to finish fifth in the event.
On the men's side, seniors Thomas Sensing and Brent LaRue each turned in solid performances in the shot put. Sensing finished third in the event with a toss of 53-0.75 and LaRue notched a new indoor-best of 43-4.50 to finish ninth. LaRue can build on that performance next week as he will compete in the heptathlon where he earned All-ACC honors last season and won the competition in 2007.
In the men's 400m dash, juniors Tyler Dodds and Allen Lunkenheimer each won their respective heats and turned in season-best times to finish 10th and 11th. Dodds crossed the line in 48.81 and Lunkenheimer posted a 49.15.
On Friday night, sophomore Molly Binder won the women's 600m dash with an impressive time of 1:33.52. That time was also a new personal-best.
Senior Caroline Vaughn would take third in women's 60m hurdles as she made the finals for the second-straight week after running a season-best 8.46 in the prelims. Junior Caitlin Crawford also took third in the women's 1,000m run with a time of 2:53.07.
For the men, senior Jon Reid also turned in a good time in the men's 400m dash, crossing the line in 21.88 to finish fourth overall.
The Deacons will return to Blacksburg, Va., next weekend for the Indoor ACC Championships. The combined event athletes will start the competition off on Wednesday with the majority of the event finals concluding on Saturday.
