WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest men's golf team will look to keep the momentum rolling for a good start this spring as it heads to the Seahawk Intercollegiate on Monday at the Landfall Country Club in Wilmington, NC.
The Demon Deacons are coming off a second place finish at the season-opening JU Invitational and a victory at the Wexford Plantation last week. Wake has also had the individual champion at each of the first two events as Brendan Gielow took home the title down in Jacksonville and Lee Bedford claimed his first collegiate victory at the Wexford.
Gielow and Bedford will be joined this week by freshman Evan Beck, who bounced-back after a tough tournament in Jacksonville to post a top-15 finish at the Wexford. He carded rounds of 72-75 and finished at 3-over par.
Senior Travis Wadkins will be making his first appearance of the spring this week. He finished the fall with a 76.3 stroke average through 15 tournament rounds and carded a pair of season-low 73s.
Freshman Charlie Harrison will round out the Deacon scorers this week. He is coming off a good final round at the Wexford where he posted a 1-over 73. Harrison is averaging 76.7 strokes per round through 11 tournament rounds this season.
Playing as an individual this week will be sophomore Daniel Meggs. He is averaging 75.4 strokes per round through 14 rounds this year with a pair of team-low 68s last fall.
Wake will be joined in the field by a pair of top-10 teams. South Carolina is ranked eighth in the latest Golf World/Nike Coaches Poll and Augusta State is ranked ninth. The Deacs received a total of 11 votes and is currently ranked 33rd.
The first two rounds of the event will be played on Monday with the final 18-holes on Tuesday. Action gets underway with a 9 am shotgun start on Monday morning. The weather forecast for Wilmington looks good on Monday with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-50s. But the forecast for Tuesday calls for rain showers with highs around 55.
The Landfall Country Club will also be the host of the 2010 NCAA Women's National Championships later this spring.
