WINSTON-SALEM, NC - After nearly a month break, the Wake Forest women's golf team returns to action this weekend as it heads to New Orleans, La., for the Tiger/Wave Classic. The 54-hole event is being played at the English Turn Country Club, which played host to the PGA Tour's Zurich Classic.
This will be the Deacon's fourth-straight trip to LSU's spring event. The last three seasons, the tournament was played at LSU's University Club in Baton Rouge, La., but this season, LSU is partnering with Tulane to host the event. The Green Wave women's golf program was cut after Hurricane Katrina and is now in its second season back on the course.
The tournament usually attracts one of the best fields in the country and this year, it also features one of the largest fields. A total of 23 teams are competing this weekend with 15 of those teams ranked in the top-50 of the latest Golf World/Nike Coaches Poll. Auburn (No. 3) tops a list of six teams ranked in the top-15. The Tigers are joined by Purdue (No. 6), Alabama (No. 7), Tennessee (No. 11), Vanderbilt (No. 12) and Wake Forest (No. 13).
"We are really excited to get going this weekend," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "The large field features some very good teams and we're looking forward to playing with them. We have had a few weeks to prepare now and the students are ready to go."
Dailey's lineup this weekend will feature juniors Natalie Sheary and Allie Bodemann along with sophomore Cheyenne Woods and freshmen Michelle Shin and Stephanie Kim.
Woods and Sheary lead the squad with matching 73.9 stroke averages through five events. Both players have posted season-low rounds of 69 this year while Sheary has finished outside of the top-11 just once. Shin has had a great start to her collegiate career, playing in all five tournaments and averaging 74.9 strokes per round.
The Deacs started the spring out west at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in early February, finishing eighth in a very strong field. The month off in between events afforded the team time to prepare for the rest of the spring.
"I think the break was good for us," said Dailey. "We didn't play as well as we would have liked at the Northrop Grumman so we had plenty of time the last couple of weeks to work on some things. The students just worked so hard this past month and I think we're ready to go. We're going to be more in a routine the rest of the spring and hopefully we can get some momentum going."
The Tiger/Wave Classic will get underway on Friday, March 12, and will conclude on Sunday, March 14. The forecast looks favorable for golf all weekend as temperatures are expected to be around 70 degrees with little chance of rain.
Golfstat.com will have live scoring of all three rounds and WakeForestSports.com will have a complete recap at the end of each day.
