WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team ended the 2009-10 season with a 73-49 loss to North Carolina A&T in the opening round of the Women's National Invitation tournament in Reynolds Varsity Gym.
Wake Forest finishes with an 18-14 record. A&T improves to 22-10 and will face Charlotte in the second round of the tournament.
Brittany Waters led the Demon Deacons with 13 points. Senior Courteney Morris and sophomore Secily Ray had the game-high 10 rebounds.
Three Aggies scored the game-high 19 points. Jaleesa Sams, Ta'Wuana Cook and Amber Calvin, were all just one point shy of 20. Lamona Smalley had the Aggie-best nine rebounds.
The Aggie shooting was on target and the Demon Deacons was unable to answer. Amber Calvin netted 4-of-8 from beyond the 3-point line, helping the team finish 50 percent when shooting 3s and 47 percent overall.
Wake Forest out-rebounded the Aggies 48-37.
"Our shots just weren't going in. We'd get the rebound and then couldn't do anything with it," Wake Forest head coach Mike Petersen said.
A&T jumped out to an 11-0 lead to start the game, gaining momentum off back-to-back 3s from Amber Calvin. Brittany Waters cut the Aggie lead to six points after completing a 3-point play at 17:55, but the Aggies continued to find the net and built a 19-point lead with 6:30 play in the first half.
Wake Forest was unable to chip away at the advantage in the second half. The Aggies didn't allow the Deacons to get closer than 15 points and an Amber Calvin layup with one second to play ended the game with a final score of 73-49.
