Wake Forest Open Set To Start On Friday

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Over 1,500 athletes from over 40 different schools and organizations will descend upon Kentner Stadium this weekend for the first meet of the 2010 outdoor season, the Wake Forest Open.
Top-athletes from up and down the east coast will be competing this weekend with along with members of a total of 15 schools from North Carolina - Appalachian State, Brevard, Davidson, Duke, East Carolina, High Point, Lenoir-Rhyne, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, UNC Greensboro, St Augustine, Western Carolina, Winston-Salem State and Wake Forest.
The Wake Forest track & field program will also dedicate its throws complex this weekend in honor of the late Cliff Neal. Neal was a four-year letterwinner for the Demon Deacons. He won the 2002 ACC Hammer Throw with a school-record toss of 194-10. That record still stands today.
Neal, who was a Winston-Salem native, graduated from Wake Forest in 2002 and was working towards a law degree at UNC Chapel Hill when he died suddenly in December of 2004, at the age of 24.
A formal ceremony will begin at 11 am on Saturday, March 20, and will be followed by the Clifford Irving Neal Hammer Throw Competition later that afternoon.
There is a great mix of athletes set to compete this weekend which will provide a great atmosphere for the opening outdoor meet of the season.
The action will get underway bright and early Friday morning with the women's hammer throw at 9:30 a.m. The first running event will start at 1:00 p.m. Friday afternoon and conclude with the Annie Bersagel 10,000-meter run at 8:00 p.m.
On Saturday, the women's javelin will kick things off at 8:30 a.m. while the first running event is slated to start at Noon. The final event will be the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay and that is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
