WILMINGTON, NC - Inclement weather in the Wilmington, NC, area on Tuesday forced the cancelation of the final round of the Seahawk Invitational at the Landfall Country Club. Wake Forest finishes the event tied for sixth as the 36-hole results are made final.
The final round got underway Tuesday morning under very poor conditions. High winds and cool temperatures made golfing very difficult. After about two hours of play, heavy rain moved into the area and the tournament officials decided to cancel the rest of the round.
Wake had started the tournament on Monday with a round of 294 in the morning but finished on a bit of a sour note with a round of 301. Sitting in a tie for sixth heading into Tuesday, the Deacs came out focused and were playing well when play was called.
"We came out with a little more fight and a little more urgency today," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "I don't know how far up the board we moved but the guys were playing well and I am proud of them. The conditions were not easy this morning but they came out focused and played hard."
The Deacs finish the event tied for sixth with VCU at 19-over par. Augusta State takes the team title at 7-under while ASU's Patrick Reed and East Carolina's Jake Colley shared the individual title at 5-under par.
Senior Brendan Gielow led the way for Wake with a tied for 11th finish at 2-over par. Sophomore Lee Bedford posted scores of 73-75 on Monday and finished tied for 16th at 4-over.
Freshman Evan Beck carded rounds of 76-74 to tie for 24th at 6-over while fellow freshman Charlie Harrison and senior Travis Wadkins both finished 8-over par and tied for 33rd.
Sophomore Daniel Meggs played as an individual this week and carded rounds of 76-75 to tie for 28th at 7-over.
The Deacs will return to action on March 14-15, at the General Hackler Championship at the TPC of Myrtle Beach. Wake is the two-time defending champion at the event.
