WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest men's golf team continues its spring push this weekend as it heads to a familiar tournament, The Hootie At Bulls Bay in Awandaw, S.C.
The 54-hole event, which is being played at the beautiful Bulls Bay County Club, will begin on Sunday, March 28, and end on Tuesday, March 30. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of all three rounds.
This will be the Demon Deacons' sixth appearance at The Hootie and this year may present the toughest field. Eleven of the 15 teams are ranked in the top-40 of the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, headlined by No. 3 and defending champion Augusta State. The Jaguars ran away with the title last year after firing a remarkable 17-under.
Wake comes into this year's event ranked No. 38. Last year, the Deacs rebounded after a tough opening round to fire a 6-under 278 in round two and an even-par 284 in round three. Wake finished tied for seventh with ACC-foe Clemson.
The Deacs have enjoyed success at The Hootie, winning the event in both 2006 and 2007. In 2007, Brendan Gielow carded rounds of 71-70-71=212 (-1) to finish tied for 13th with teammate Dustin Groves.
Gielow will be playing in the event for the fourth-straight year and will be joined in the lineup by fellow senior Travis Wadkins. Wadkins will be making his third appearance with his best finish coming in 2009 as he opened with a 2-under 69 en route to finishing tied for 15th.
Sophomores Lee Bedford, Daniel Meggs and freshman Evan Beck will round-out head coach Jerry Haas' lineup this week. Bedford fired a career-low tying 5-under 66 in the final round last year at The Hootie and tied Wadkins for 13th at even-par.
There is a slight chance of showers for Sunday's opening round, but temperatures are supposed to be around 70 degrees for first part of next week with mostly sunny skies. Be sure to check back to WakeForetSports.com for a complete recap at the end of each day.
