WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Senior Brendan Gielow started the season in grand fashion, as member of the victorious Team USA at the Walker Cup. He road that success right onto campus.
Gielow's latest accolade came on Wednesday as he ascended to the top of the Golfstat men's collegiate individual rankings. The jump came on the heels of his third place showing at The Hootie at Bulls Bay earlier this week. He fired a bogey-free 5-under 66 in the second round which was his lowest round all year. He then followed it with a final round 69 which helped the Demon Deacons finish second in a very strong field.
The Muskegon, Mich., native is averaging 71.6 strokes per round this year, which is over a stroke lower than his career average of 72.8. He has recorded five top-5s and has finished no worse than tied for 14th in any of his eight events. Gielow is also the only player on the team this season in which all 22 of his rounds have counted towards the team score.
At the JU Invitational earlier this spring, which was played at the famed TPC of Sawgrass Stadium Course, Gielow birdied two out of the final three holes to claim a one-shot victory which was the second of his career. A 3-under 69 in mostly rainy conditions in the second round was what propelled him to the win in Jacksonville.
Gielow was named one of the 25 candidates for the 2010 The Ben Hogan Award Presented by Chesapeake Energy. The award is given annually to the nation's top male golfer. He also took home ACC Player of the Month honors for February after notching a win and a 10th place finish at the Wexford Intercollegiate.
Gielow and the rest of the Wake Forest men's golf team will have this weekend off before returning to action at the Wolfpack Invitational on April 9-10. That event will serve as a final tune-up for the ACC Championships which are being held April 23-25 at Old North State in Uwharrie Point, NC.
