Winston-Salem, N.C. - The No. 50 Wake Forest women's tennis team recorded a 4-3 victory over No. 69 Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at Leighton Stadium. With the win, Wake Forest improves to 8-11 (2-5 ACC) on the season, while the Hokies fall to .500 with a record of 9-9 (2-6 ACC).
Wake Forest started out strong on the day by taking the doubles point with wins in each of the three matches. The 45th ranked pair of senior Sasha Kulikova and freshman Kathryn Talbert teamed up to post an impressive 8-2 win at the top doubles position. Senior Aileen Davis and Emilee Malvehy claimed an 8-5 victory at the number two spot, and the duo of Martina Pavelec and Katarina Reveche rounded out the doubles scoring with an 8-5 win.
Kulikova continued her strong play in singles action playing at the number two spot, as she posted a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory over Virginia Tech's Martha Blakely. Malvehy then added to the Wake Forest point total by defeating Emily Lauten of Virginia Tech in straight sets by a score of 6-1, 7-5. Playing at the top singles position, No. 64 Martina Pavelec claimed a 6-2 victory in the first set against Virginia Tech's Yasmin Hamza. It was a tightly contested second set that was forced to a tiebreaker, and Hamza earned the set point with a 7-1 victory in the tiebreaker. Pavelec remained in control throughout the third and final set, and she was able to hang on and take a 6-2 victory.
Wake Forest will continue ACC play tomorrow afternoon when they host 40th ranked Virginia at Leighton Stadium. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m.
