WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team will finish regular-season play with road matches at Boston College on Friday at 3 p.m. and Maryland on Sunday at noon.
The Deacons fell 4-1 to No. 6 Duke at Leighton Stadium on Wednesday, dropping them to 9-12 (2-7 Atlantic Coast Conference). Boston College is 6-13 (1-8 ACC) and Maryland is 2-11 (0-9 ACC).
Wake Forest claimed the doubles point against Duke with wins at the top two doubles positions. The 36th-ranked team of Sasha Kulikova and Kathryn Talbert downed No. 47 Ellah Nze and Amanda Granson 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, and the tandem of Aileen Davis and Emilee Malvehy upset No. 66 Monica Gorny and Mary Clayton 8-5 at the No. 2 spot.
Kulikova and Talbert have now gone 10-6 at the top doubles position in dual matches. Davis and Malvehy's victory marked their first win over a ranked opponent this season.
However, the Deacons came up short in singles as the Blue Devils picked up wins in four matches to clinch the victory. Wednesday's match marked the first time all year that Wake Forest took the doubles point but failed to win the overall match.
Kulikova had her four-match singles winning streak snapped, falling to Duke's Elizabeth Plotkin at No. 2 singles. It was a rare loss for Kulikova, who has posted a record of 15-5 this season, including 5-3 against ACC opponents.
Freshman Talbert showed signs of breaking out of a recent slump, splitting sets with No. 36 Reka Zsilinszka at the No. 3 position before the match was stopped when the Blue Devils clinched the overall win.
Boston College snapped an eight-match losing streak by defeating rival Boston University 6-1 on Tuesday. The Eagles have not beaten an ACC opponent since defeating Maryland in their first conference match of the season.
Maryland has been shutout 7-0 in its last seven ACC matches. Senior Maggie MacKeever has played predominately at the No. 1 singles spot in conference play, posting a 1-6 ACC record. The Terrapins' top doubles team of MacKeever and Lisa Miller has gone 4-7 in dual matches.
Following this weekend's matches, the Deacons will compete in the 2010 ACC Tennis Championships held at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C., April 22-25.
