WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest opens the second half of Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend, traveling to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to face the Boston College Eagles.
Game times for the weekend series are set for 2:30 p.m. on Friday, 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Demon Deacons are 2-13 in the ACC at the halfway mark and 10-25 overall on the season. Wake enters the weekend sixth in the Atlantic Division.
The Deacs are coming off their third straight one-run loss, a 9-8 defeat to Elon on Wednesday. Bentley Heyman led Wake Forest in the game with a career-high tying three hits. Ryan Semeniuk and Mark Rhine each homered in the loss. For Rhine, the home run was the first of his collegiate career.
Steven Brooks leads the Demon Deacons on the season with a .341 batting average and has also added four home runs and 21 RBIs. Brooks ranks second in the ACC with 19 stolen bases. Mike Murray is batting .399 on the year with three homers and a team-high 26 RBIs, while Semeniuk is hitting .300 with a team-best six home runs and also 15 RBIs.
Freshman LHP Tim Cooney (3-2, 3.47) will get the nod in the series opener on Friday afternoon. Cooney enters the weekend ranked 11th in the ACC in ERA, tied for eighth in innings pitched (49.1) and ninth in opponent batting average (.247). On Saturday, sophomore LHP Austin Stadler (1-2, 6.99) is scheduled to get the start. Freshman RHP Justin Van Grouw (1-2, 5.02) will make his first start in an ACC game in the series finale on Sunday.
Redshirt senior RHP Joel Ernst has been the most effective reliever for the Demon Deacons, compiling a 1-1 record with two saves and a 4.22 ERA in 18 appearances. Ernst ranks in a tie for fourth in the conference in appearances. Junior RHP Ryan McGrath has made 21 relief outings on the season, which places him in a tie for first in the ACC. McGrath is 1-2 on the season with an 8.10 ERA.
Boston College enters the weekend with a 16-17 overall record and a 6-9 mark in the ACC, which places them in a tie for third in the Atlantic Division. The Eagles are coming off a split of two midweek games, losing to Massachusetts 8-4 and defeating Harvard 10-9. Last weekend, BC took two of three games from Maryland.
The Eagles are hitting .281 as a team, which ranks 10th in the conference. Anthony Melchionda paces Boston College at the plate with a .339 batting average to go along with three homers and 19 RBIs. Robbie Anston is hitting .323 on the season with 15 RBIs and a team-high 10 stolen bases. Mickey Wiswall leads the team with 10 home runs and 39 RBIs and has a .279 batting average.
The Boston College pitchers have compiled a 6.38 ERA, good for 11th in the league. Junior LHP Pat Dean (5-0, 2.93) is scheduled to start the series opener on Friday, while sophomore RHP Mike Dennhardt (2-5, 7.28) will get the call in Saturday's game. Junior RHP John Leonard (1-0, 1.29) is projected to get the start in Sunday's series finale.
Matt Brazis and Kevin Moran are tied for the team lead in apperances with 14. Brazis serves as the Eagles' closer with a team-high four saves on the season and a 0-0 record with a 5.40 ERA. Moran is 4-4 on the year with a save and a 9.20 ERA.
The series between Wake Forest and Boston College is tied at 6-6. The Eagles won two of three games from the Deacs in the 2009 series in Winston-Salem. Wake Forest won two of three games the last time the two teams met at Boston College in 2008.
