WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest women's golf team enters this weekend's ACC Championships in an unusual position, as the defending champions. The Demon Deacons stopped Duke's 13-year reign at the top with a stunning 24-shot victory last year at Sedgefield Country Club and they are looking for a similar performance this season.
This year's event, which is also being played at Sedgefield Country Club, will begin at 8:30 am Friday, April 16. The second round will also begin at 8:30 am on Saturday morning with the final round starting at 8:00 am on Sunday. Golfstat.com will have live scoring off all three rounds and TheACC.com will have live video coverage starting on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm and on Sunday at 12:30 pm.
The Demon Deacons enter the tournament after perhaps its best showing of the season at the Bryan National. Wake finished the event second, just one-shot behind Florida State after three solid rounds.
"We've got some good momentum going from how we played at the Bryan National," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "The students know they can win now. We were right in the mix all the way to the final hole and I think that gave them a lot of confidence. Everyone has been positive this week and we're well prepared."
Wake's lineup this week will consist of sophomore Cheyenne Woods, freshman Michelle Shin, senior Dolores White and juniors Natalie Sheary and Allie Bodemann.
Woods is coming into the week red hot, winning the Bryan National her last time out with a career-best 54-hole total of 5-under 211. She has finished outside of the top-21 just once this season and has recorded five top-10s. Woods also leads the team and is third in the ACC with a 73.6 stroke average. Last year at the ACC Championship at Sedgefield, Woods finished tied for 16th after closing with a final round 73.
Sheary and Bodemann will each be playing in their third ACC Championship. Sheary finished fifth as a freshman in 2008 and then defeated Duke's Amanda Blumenhurst on the first playoff hole to win the individual title last season. She opened the tournament last year with a career-best 5-under 66 which is also a women's course record at Sedgefield. Currently, Sheary owns a 72.00 stroke average in her six ACC Championship rounds.
Bodemann has also enjoyed success at the ACCs as she finished eighth in 2008 and then tied for 10th last season. She has averaged 74.00 strokes per round for the two years with her lowest round of 2-under 70 coming in the second round in 2008. This will be the first ACC Championship for both White and Shin. White played very solid at The Bryan National. She finished tied for 14th after playing her final 45 holes at even-par. Shin has enjoyed a tremendous freshman campaign, playing in all eight events and holding the second-lowest stroke average on the team at 74.9.
"We're all real excited about defending this week," said Dailey. "The students love the course and the feel comfortable on it. We obviously did well last year and I think they know what type of shots the need to be successful on the course."
"One of the keys this week will be getting off to a good start," Dailey continued. "We had struggled with that this year and at the Bryan, we got off to a great start and we had a great week. Last year at Sedgefield, we played a beautiful round to start off with and that really gave us some confidence for the rest of the weekend. This is a tough course to have to make a comeback."
The Demon Deacons have gone head-to-head this season with five of the eight other teams in the field this week. Wake is a combined 12-9 against those five teams. The Deacs are 4-0 against NC State and 4-1 against North Carolina. Wake and Florida State split the two meetings this year while Duke has beaten Wake four out of the five times and Virginia holds a 3-2 edge. The Deacs have not played in the same tournament as Boston College, Maryland or Miami yet this season.
Wake Forest will start the opening round in the final group on Friday morning beginning at 10:10 am. The Deacons are paired with North Carolina and Duke. Check back to WakeForestSports.com at the end of each day for a complete recap.
