Weekly Recap:
The Wake Forest baseball team finished the last week with an 0-4 record after losing a midweek game at home to Elon and getting swept at Boston College over the weekend. The Deacs dropped a 9-8 decision to Elon on Wednesday and lost 11-9 on Friday, 5-3 on Saturday and 12-7 on Sunday against the Eagles.
The Demon Deacons are now 10-28 on the season and 2-16 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
As a team, Wake Forest hit .279 on the week. Redshirt freshman outfielder Mac Williamson led the Demon Deacons at the plate, finishing the week hitting .533 (8-for-15) with three RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman shortstop Pat Blair hit .500 (4-for-8) with five runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore Bentley Heyman posted a .364 batting average (4-for-11), while sophomore Shane Kroker hit .333 (3-for-9). Junior Steven Brooks hit at a .316 (6-for-19) clip on the week with six runs scored.
For the season, the Demon Deacons are batting .264. Brooks has a team-leading .340 batting average with four homers and 23 RBIs. Brooks has also stolen 21 bases on the season, which ranks first in the ACC. Senior Mike Murray is hitting .331 on the year with three home runs and a team-high 29 RBIs. Ryan Semeniuk has a team-best six homers and has driven in 17 runs, while hitting .292. Matt Conway is hitting .308 on the season, while Williamson has a .277 batting average with three homers and 23 RBIs.
On the mound, Wake Forest had an 8.18 earned run average on the week. Sophomore reliever Gabe Feldman appeared in two games and did not allow a run, giving up three hits in 1.2 innings. Freshman Justin Van Grouw made his first career ACC start on Sunday and allowed six runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits with a strikeout.
The Wake Forest pitching staff has compiled a 6.58 ERA on the season. Freshman Niko Spezial has the lowest ERA on the team, posting a 4.24 ERA with a 1-4 record in nine appearances. Redshirt senior Joel Ernst has appeared in 19 games on the year and has a 1-1 record with two saves and a 4.37 ERA. Freshman Tim Cooney has the lowest ERA among the Demon Deacon starters. Cooney is 3-3 on the year and has a 4.45 ERA.
Wake Forest closes its road swing on Tuesday at Charlotte with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. against the 49ers. The Deacs open a four-game homestand on Wednesday at 6 p.m. with the first meeting of the season with UNC Greensboro. Next weekend, Wake hosts Duke in a three-game ACC series. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
