BOONE, N.C. - Jeremy Dowdy was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBIs to lead Appalachian State to a 10-5 win over Wake Forest on Wednesday afternoon at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.
Wake Forest drops to 12-32 with the loss, while Appalachian State improves to 31-8-1 with the win.
Appalachian State starter Matt Andress earned the win to improve to 8-2 on the season. Andress gave up two runs, only one earned, on five hits with five strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. Wake Forest starter Tim Cooney suffered the loss to drop to 3-5. Cooney allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
Pat Blair led Wake Forest at the plate, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Blair also recorded his 16th double of the season to move into a tie for third for doubles by a freshman in Wake Forest history. Mike Murray added three hits with an RBI and a run scored.
Dowdy drove in a game-high three runs and had three hits to lead Appalachian State offensively. Dowdy also hit his fourth home run of the season. Jerod Faggart also homered and went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Ryan Stetson belted his third home run of the season.
Appalachian State grabbed an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Stetson led off the inning with a home run, his third of the season, just to the left of straightaway center field. After a strikeout of Hector Crespo, Wes Hobson extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single to center. Faggart doubled off the wall in left-center field to score Hobson from first. Dowdy then lined a single back up the middle to plate Faggart for the third run of the inning.
Wake Forest threatened in the top of the second, but was unable to bring a run across. Mac Williamson reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to start the inning. After a swinging strikeout by Carlos Lopez, Matt Conway lined a single to left field to move Williamson to second. Taylor Kaprive just missed a home run to center field as the Appalachian State center fielder ran down the fly ball at the base of the wall. Williamson advanced to third on the fly out. Mark Rhine struck out looking to end the threat and leave runners on at first and third.
The Mountaineers extended their lead with a run in the bottom of the second. Tyler Zupcic looped a single to left-center field to start the inning. Cooney had Zupcic picked off between first and second, but Conway's throw to second was high and went into left field, allowing Zupcic to move all the way to third. Zupcic came in to score on a fielding error by Kaprive at third, which allowed Jason Wallace to reach.
The Demon Deacons cut the lead in half with two runs in the top of the third. Blair singled through the left side to start the inning and moved to second when Ryan Semeniuk reached on a fielding error by the Appalachian third baseman. Steven Brooks flew out to center for the first out of the inning. Murray drove home Blair and advanced Semeniuk to third with a single to right. Williamson reached first on a fielder's choice groundout to short with Semeniuk scoring on the play to make the score 4-2.
Appalachian scored for the third straight inning in the bottom of the third, plating two runs.. Crespo started the inning by reaching on an infield single to short and moved to second on a stolen base. After the next two batters were retired on strikeouts, Dowdy launched a two-run homer over the left field wall, his fourth round-tripper of the season.
Wake Forest responded with two runs in the top of the fourth. Conway reached second on a two-base error on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder to start the inning. Kaprive lined out to right for the first out of the inning. Rhine singled to left field to score Conway from second. A double by Blair just inside the third-base bag plated Rhine all the way from first to cut the ASU lead to 6-4.
The Demon Deacons cut the lead to one with a run in the top of the fifth. Murray ripped a single to right for his third hit of the game to lead off the inning. Williamson hit a ground ball to short that was bobbled by the ASU shortstop, allowing Williamson to reach first and moving Murray to second. Lopez doubled to the left-center field gap to score Murray and move Williamson to third with no outs. Wake Forest was unable to score the tying run as Conway flew out to right, Kaprive struck out swinging and Rhine grounded out to short to end the inning.
Appalachian State got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out, solo home run by Faggart that hit off the top of the left field wall and bounced over for a homer.
Wake Forest threatened in the top of the sixth, but left the bases loaded. Blair singled to left-center to start the inning. With two outs, Murray drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Williamson reached on an infield single back to the pitcher to load the bases. Lopez hit the first pitch of his at bat to the third baseman, who tagged the third base bag to end the inning.
Appalachian State extended its lead to three with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Zupcic walked on four pitches to start the inning. Wallace popped out to short for the first out of the inning. With Doug Jones at the plate, Zupcic stole second and then stole third on ball four to Jones to put runners at the corners with one out. Jones advanced to second on a stolen base. Zupcic came in to score on a fielding error by Blair that allowed Stetson to reach first and advanced Jones to third. Stetson was thrown out trying to steal second for the second out of the inning. Crespo grounded out to second to end the inning.
The Mountaineers added two runs in the home half of the seventh. With one out, Faggart singled up the middle and advanced to third when Dowdy singled to right field. David Towarnicky fouled out to Murray for the second out of the inning. Zupcic chopped a single over the head of Conway at first to score Faggart from third and moved Dowdy to third. A wild pitch scored Dowdy from third to make the score 10-5.
Wake Forest now has eight days off for final exams. The Deacs are back in action on Friday, May 7, with the first of a three-game series at North Carolina. Game times are set for 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday game of the series will be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Networks.
