WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest men's golf team will head to the new Lonnie Poole Golf Course this weekend in Raliegh, NC, for the Wolfpack Intercollegiate, hosted by NC State.
The first and second rounds of the event will be played on Friday, April 9, with the final round set for Saturday, April 10. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of all three rounds.
"We're very excited to get going this week," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "We're coming off a good tournament at The Hootie and we get to play the new Lonie Poole Golf Course. I have heard nothing but good things about this course so we're real excited to see it."
The Deacon lineup this week weekend will be headed-up by senior Brendan Gielow. Gielow, who is currently ranked No. 1 by Golfstat in the individual rankings, leads the team with a 71.6 stroke average. He finished tied for 14th at his first tournament of the fall and has yet to finish outside of the top-10 since, including picking up his second career victory at the JU Invitational in February.
Gielow will be joined at the top of the lineup by sophomore Lee Bedford. Bedford is coming-off a career-low 8-under 63 in the final round of The Hootie at Bulls Bay. He finished the tournament at 7-under par and tied for second. In his five events this spring, the reigning ACC Men's Golf Co-Player of the Month has not finished outside of the top-11. This will also be somewhat of a home match for Bedford as he grew-up in the Raleigh area.
Senior Travis Wadkins, freshman Evan Beck and sophomore Daniel Meggs will round-out the Deacon lineup this week. Wadkins had his best tournament of the year at The Hootie, carding a season-low 2-under 69 in the opening round and finished tied for 24th at 2-over par.
With the ACC Championships right around the corner, Wake will get a good look this week at the competition it will face at Old North State in two weeks. Nine of the 11 ACC teams are in the field at the Wolfpack. The only two teams not in attendance are Clemson and Boston College.
"This is an exciting time of year," Haas said. "Everyone is gearing towards postseason play and they're trying to find that right lineup and the right mix of guys. It think this will be a fun weekend."
The weather looks like it may also cooperate this weekend as temperatures are expected to be around 70 degrees with very little chance of rain.
