WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team will host two Atlantic Coast Conference matches this weekend, taking on Virginia Tech on Saturday and Virginia on Sunday. Both matches will begin at noon and will be played outdoors at Leighton Stadium, weather permitting.
The Deacons will enter the weekend with a record of 7-11 (1-5 ACC), which puts them in ninth place in the conference. Virginia (11-6, 3-4 ACC) occupies seventh place, and Virginia Tech (9-8, 2-5 ACC) currently sits eighth.
Wake has had a week to recuperate after dropping a pair of ACC matches last weekend. The Deacs ended up on the wrong side of a 4-3 decision against No. 13 Florida State on Friday before falling to No. 10 Miami on Saturday.
Senior Sasha Kulikova continued her strong season for the Deacons as she easily dispatched the Seminoles' No. 89 Francesca Segarelli, 6-2, 6-2. Kulikova leads the team with a singles record of 13-4 in dual matches.
Kulikova has teamed with freshman Kathryn Talbert at the top of the Wake Forest doubles lineup, and the tandem have posted an 8-5 overall record, though they have have struggled in ACC play, losing four of five conference matches.
Virginia Tech also dropped two ACC contests last weekend, falling 6-1 to No. 7 Duke and 7-0 to No. 2 North Carolina. Yasmin Hamza has led the Hokies with an 11-6 singles record, but played No. 1 singles for the first time against Duke and North Carolina, losing both matches.
Hamza teamed with Holly Johnson to upset the Tar Heels' 11th-ranked doubles team of Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski last weekend. The team of Hamza and Johnson has gone 4-2 in conference play.
Virginia also took on Duke and North Carolina last weekend, coming up just short of an upset in a 4-3 loss to the Tar Heels before losing 5-2 to the Blue Devils. The Cavaliers' No. 42 Lindsey Hardenbergh beat two ranked opponents last weekend playing at the No. 1 singles position.
The doubles team of Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra is ranked No. 44 in the country and won both matches at the No. 2 position against Duke and North Carolina.
