Weekly Recap:
Wake Forest finished last week with an 0-3 record after getting swept at North Carolina over the weekend. The Deacs dropped game one of the series 18-5, before losing the second game 7-2. The Tar Heels completed the sweep with an 8-4 win on Sunday.
The Demon Deacons are now 12-35 on the year and 4-20 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Junior Steven Brooks led Wake Forest with a .455 batting average in the series at North Carolina. Brooks added a home run, an RBI and two doubles. Senior Mike Murray hit .444 in the three games with two RBIs. Freshman Matt Conway posted a .364 batting average in the series with a homer and two RBIs. Conway had at least one hit in each game to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Freshman Pat Blair hit two home runs in the series with three RBIs.
Murray is hitting a team-best .343 on the season and has driven in a team-best 39 runs with three homers. Conway is batting .342 with three homers and 18 RBIs. Brooks has stolen a team-high 22 bases and is hitting .335 with six round-trippers and 28 RBIs. Redshirt junior Ryan Semeniuk has hit a team-high eight home runs and is batting .280 with 23 RBIs.
On the mound, sophomore Austin Stadler turned in an outstanding start on Saturday, but did not receive a decision. Stadler struck out a career-high 11 batters and only allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits in 6.0 innings. Junior Brandon Johnson threw a scoreless inning in relief against the Tar Heels with a strikeout. Junior Eli Robins appeared in two games and allowed two unearned runs with two strikeouts. Junior Mark Adzick also gave up just two unearned runs with a strikeout in 1.2 innings. Redshirt senior Joel Ernst threw 3.0 innings in the series and allowed a run on three hits.
For the season, Ernst has a 1-1 record with two saves and a team-low 3.99 in 25 appearances. Freshman Niko Spezial is 1-4 with a 4.24 ERA in nine appearances, including one start.
Wake Forest plays its final road game of the 2010 season on Wednesday, traveling to Greensboro for a 6 p.m. game against UNC Greensboro. The Deacs open a season-ending, seven-game home stand next weekend with three games against Clemson. Game times against the Tigers are set for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
