Senior Caroline Vaughn finished fourth in the women's heptathlon at the Deacon Combined Events Classic on Wednesday at Kentner Stadium to lead a quartet of Demon Deacons in the event.
Vaughn broke the 5,000-point mark for the second-straight time as she finished with a total of 5,032 points. She also amassed 5,038 points last year at this event on her way to a sixth place finish.
Freshman Gwen Ricco finished sixth in this year's event with a personal-best 4,831 points. Her sister Maddy Ricco also posted a personal-best finish with 4,530 points and took ninth while senior Alex Gove completed her first heptathlon with 4,761 points to finish seventh.
Vaughn came into the day with the lead but started with a jump of 17-7.50 in the long jump and slipped back to fourth through five events. She was fifth after six events as she tossed the javelin 76-05 but the Alpharetta, Ga., native came out strong in the 800m and ran a very good time of 2:18.58 to move back into fourth.
Gwen Ricco was ninth heading into the final day but posted three season-best finishes to bump up to sixth. She had a long jump of 18-01.00 and then tossed the javelin 99-01 before finishing third in the 800m run with a season-best time of 2:18.89.
Gove won the 800m dash with a personal-best time of 2:14.35 to finish the event seventh. She started the day with a jump of 16-08.75 in the long jump and then had a season-best toss of 86-04 in the javelin. Maddy Ricco also had a season-best toss in the javelin, breaking the 100-foot mark and finishing at 108-07.
In the men's decathlon, Canada's Jamie Adjety-Nelson came into the day with a 141-point lead and he extended the margin to 281 points through three events on Wednesday. After running a 4:49.73 in the 1,500m run, Adjety-Nelson finished with a 362-point advantage and a personal-best total of 7,829. North Carolina's Daniel Keller finished second with a strong total of 7,467 points, which is the 11th best collegiate total in the country this season. The top-24 athletes earn a trip to next month's NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
The Demon Deacons will return to action this weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. That meet will serve as the final meet for the Deacons before the NCAA First Round on May 27-29, in Greensboro, NC.
