Wake Forest Opens Season-Ending Homestand with Clemson

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest baseball team opens its season-ending, seven-game homestand this weekend with a three-game series against the Clemson Tigers.
Game times in the series are set for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Friday and Saturday games of the series will be aired live on WBRF 98.1 FM and WakeForestSports.com

The Demon Deacons, 13-35 overall and 4-20 in the ACC, are coming off a 22-9 rout at UNC Greensboro on Wednesday night. The Deacs scored the most runs in a game since the 2004 season and tallied 12 times in the first inning, tying for the fourth most runs in a single inning in school history. Matt Conway and Mac Williamson each drove in six runs in the victory. Conway had three doubles to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, while Williamson homered twice. Pat Blair, who stretched his hitting streak to eight games, and Mark Rhine each added four hits. Steven Brooks and Mike Murray contributed two hits and three RBIs each.
On the mound, Zach White earned the win in his first collegiate start. White gave up five runs, four earned, on five hits in 5.2 innings, while striking out six and walking two. Brandon Johnson pitched well out of the bullpen, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings with five hits and five strikeouts.
Conway leads Wake Forest with a .355 batting average on the year with three homers and 24 RBIs. Mike Murray is hitting .347 with a team-best 42 RBIs and three homers. Steven Brooks is batting .342 with six homers, 31 RBIs and a team-high 22 stolen bases. Blair has homered in each of the last three games and has six round-trippers on the season to go with a .283 batting average and 23 RBIs.
Sophomore lefty Austin Stadler (2-3, 5.82) will start the series opener for Wake Forest. Stadler struck out a career-high 11 and allowed just two runs, only one earned, in 6.0 innings in his last start at North Carolina. Sophomore righty Michael Dimock (2-8, 6.43), will take the mound on Saturday, while freshman southpaw Tim Cooney (3-6, 6.01) will toe the rubber in the series wrap-up on Sunday.
Redshirt senior Joel Ernst has appeared in 25 games out of the bullpen and has a 1-1 record with two saves and a 3.99 ERA. Freshman Justin Van Grouw has a 1-4 mark with a 5.05 ERA in 15 outings on the year. Junior Ryan McGrath has appeared in a team-high 26 games and has a 1-2 record with a 9.15 ERA.
Clemson brings a 32-17 overall record and a 14-10 mark in the ACC into this weekend's series. The Tigers, winners of their last seven games, currently sit in second place in the ACC's Atlantic Division, two games behind division leader Florida State. Clemson defeated Furman 12-1 on Tuesday night and swept Maryland in a three-game series last weekend.
The Tigers are hitting .308 as a team, good for sixth in the conference. Two-sport star Kyle Parker leads Clemson with a .391 batting average, 17 home runs and 50 RBIs. The 17 home runs also leads the ACC. John Hinson is hitting .360 with 11 round-trippers, 56 RBIs and a team-best 20 stolen bases. Jeff Schaus has driven in an ACC-best 64 runs on the season and is batting .320 with 11 homers.
The Clemson hurlers have compiled a 4.53 earned run average, which ranks seventh in the ACC. Junior LHP Casey Harman (6-1, 3.29) is scheduled to start Friday's series opener. Harman ranks eighth in the ERA, tied for fourth in innings pitched (76.2) and sixth in opponent batting average (.233). On Saturday, the Tigers will turn to sophomore RHP Scott Weismann (4-2, 5.01). Clemson has not announced a starter for Sunday's series finale.
Alex Frederick has made a team-high 22 appearances for the Tigers, with 21 of those coming in relief. Frederick has a 4-1 record with two saves and a 3.35 ERA. Jonathan Meyer has pitched in 18 games, all in relief, and is 2-1 on the year with two saves and a 5.19 ERA. Tomas Cruz (3-2, 4.99) and David Haselden (4-4, 4.35) have also tallied two saves for the Tigers.
Clemson leads the series against Wake Forest 115-40 in games played since 1954. The Tigers have won nine of the last 10 series between the two teams, including a three-game sweep last year at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Wake's only series victory over the last 10 years came in 2008 when the Deacs took two of three from Clemson in Winston-Salem.
