
Clemson Defeats Wake Forest to Even Series

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Clemson broke a 3-3 tie with 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning and defeated Wake Forest 17-5 on Saturday afternoon at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
Wake Forest drops to 14-36 on the year and 5-21 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Clemson improves to 33-18 and 15-11 in conference play.
Clemson starter Scott Weismann (5-2) earned the win on the mound for the Tigers, giving up four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Wake Forest starter Michael Dimock (2-9) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on four hits with five strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
Matt Conway extended his hitting streak to 13 games to lead Wake Forest at the plate. Conway hit his fourth home run of the season and finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI. Mike Murray also homered and drove in a pair of runs. Steven Brooks and Ryan Semeniuk each added a pair of hits.
Jeff Schaus drove in a game-high three runs to lead Clemson. Schaus went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Kyle Parker and Brad Miller each homered for the Tigers. Parker hit his 18th homer of the season and finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Miller homered for the second straight day and for the fifth time on the season.
Clemson took the lead in the top of the first with two runs. After the first two batters in the inning were retired, John Hinson drew a walk and then came around to score on a two-run home run to center field by Parker, his 18th round-tripper of the season.
The Tigers added another run in the top of the second on a leadoff homer by Miller, his second of the series and fifth of the season.
Wake Forest rallied to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Semeniuk started the inning with a double off the wall in left-center field. After a ground out to short by Brooks, Murray hit a homer down the left-field line to cut the Tiger lead to 3-2. With two outs, Mac Williamson singled to center and then stole second. A double by Carlos Lopez scored Williamson to tie the game.
Clemson broke the tie and broke the game open with 10 runs in the top of the fifth. Richie Shaffer started the inning by reaching on a two-base error on a dropped fly ball by Semeniuk. Wilson Boyd singled up the middle to score Shaffer. Phil Pohl was hit by a pitch and Will Lamb reached on an infield single to load the bases. After a strikeout by Mike Freeman, Hinson reached on an infield single to the pitcher to score Boyd. Pohl came in to score on a wild pitch. A walk to Parker loaded the bases again. Schaus drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle. Parker came in to score on a passed ball and then Schaus scored on a wild pitch on ball four to Miller. Schaus scored on a wild pitch for the seventh Tiger run of the inning. Pohl singled to center field with the bases loaded to score two more runs. Lamb drove in a run on a single to left field to close the scoring in the inning.
Wake Forest got a run back in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Semeniuk walked and came around to score on a double down the left field line by Brooks.
The Tigers tallied two more runs in the top of the sixth. Schaus tripled to left field with one out and scored on a fielding error by Pat Blair on a ground ball by Miller. Miller scored from second on a double to left field by Shaffer.
After Clemson scored a run in the top of the eighth, Wake Forest scored a run in the bottom of the eighth on a leadoff home run by Conway, his fourth of the season.
Clemson closed the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Schaus.
The Demon Deacons and Tigers close the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Freshman LHP Tim Cooney (3-6, 6.01) will take the mound for Wake Forest, while Clemson has yet to announce a starter.
