Weekly Recap:
The Wake Forest baseball team finished last week with a 3-1 record after winning a midweek game against UNC Greensboro on Wednesday and taking two of three from Clemson over the weekend.
The Deacs defeated UNCG 22-9 on Wednesday and won the series opener against the Tigers 9-5 on Friday. After Clemson evened the series with a 17-5 win on Saturday, Wake Forest won the rubber game on Sunday, downing Clemson 11-2.
Wake Forest is now 15-36 on the season and 6-21 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Junior Steven Brooks hit .500 (7-for-14) over the week with seven RBIs and seven runs scored. Freshman Matt Conway had a .474 batting average (9-for-19) with a home run, nine RBIs and five runs scored. Conway had at least one hit in every game last week to extend his hitting streak to 14 straight games. Freshman Mark Rhine hit .444 (8-for-18) over the four games with two RBIs and six runs scored. Redshirt freshman Mac Williamson had a pair of multi-homer games on the week and hit .438 (7-for-16) with four homers, 10 RBIs and six runs scored. Senior Mike Murray finished the week with a .400 batting average (6-for-15) with eight RBIs, while freshman Pat Blair hit .375 (6-for-16).
For the season, Conway leads the Demon Deacons with a .361 batting average to go along with four home runs and 24 RBIs. Murray is hitting .348 on the season with four homers and a team-high 47 RBIs. Brooks is swinging the bat at a .347 clip with six homers, 35 RBIs and a team-high 23 stolen bases. Williamson (.278, 7 HR, 36 RBIs), Blair (.277, 6 HR, 23 RBIs) and redshirt junior Ryan Semeniuk (.276, 8 HR, 27 RBIs) are also hitting better than .275 on the year.
On the mound, Wake Forest got three solid starts on the week. Sophomore LHP Austin Stadler earned the win in the series opener against Clemson. Stadler struck out 11 batters for the second straight week and allowed just one run on six hits over 6.2 innings. Stadler had at least one strikeout in each inning of work and had multiple strikeouts in four of his six innings. Freshman LHP Tim Cooney turned in an equally impressive performance in the series-clinching win on Sunday. Cooney, who earned the victory, allowed just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts over 8.0 innings. Sophomore lefty Zach White made his first collegiate start on Wednesday at UNC Greensboro and picked up the win, giving up five runs, four earned, on five hits with six strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
Out of the bullpen, junior Brandon Johnson appeared in two games and did not allow a run. Johnson threw 3.1 innings and allowed five hits, while striking out six batters. Redshirt senior Joel Ernst threw a perfect inning of relief against Clemson on Sunday, while senior Alex Wiesner allowed one unearned run in an inning of action.
Wake Forest closes the season with four games next week. The Deacs host Appalachian State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the team's final non-conference game of 2010. Wake Forest faces Maryland in a three-game series, beginning on Thursday. Game times are set for 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
