Wake Forest Topples Appalachian State, 10-3

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest starter Zach White allowed just one run in five innings, while the Wake Forest offense scored double-digit runs for the third time in the last five games to lead the Demon Deacons to a 10-3 win over Appalachian State on Tuesday night at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
Wake Forest, which has now won four of its last five games, improves to 16-36 on the season, while Appalachian State falls to 32-16-1 with the loss.
White turned in another impressive start to improve his record to 2-1. The sophomore southpaw surrendered just one run on five hits, while striking out three over 5.0 strong innings. Appalachian State starter Ryan Arrowood received the lost to fall to 6-4 on the season. Arrowood allowed four runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
The Deacs also got good work out of the bullpen as six Demon Deacon relievers threw a scoreless outing. Mark Adzick, Ryan Bouton, Matt Conway, Ryan McGrath, Niko Spezial and Alex Wiesner each did not allow a run in relief.
Ryan Semeniuk led Wake Forest at the plate with a team-high three hits to go with an RBI and two runs scored. Conway went 2-for-3 with a home run, his fifth of the season, three RBIs and two runs scored. With the two hits, the ACC Freshman of the Year candidate extended his hitting streak to 15 games, the longest active hitting streak in the conference. Carlos Lopez also hit his seventh homer of the season for the Deacs and had an RBI. Pat Blair, Steven Brooks, Mike Lubanski and Mac Williamson all added two hits. Mark Rhine had two RBIs and went 1-for-4 at the plate.
Jack Myers went 3-for-4 to lead Appalachian State at the plate. Jerod Faggart hit his team-best 13th homer of the season for the Mountaineers and went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
The Demon Deacons took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. Lubanski started the inning with a single to center. After Rhine popped out to second for the first out of the inning, Blair lined a single to left field to advance Lubanski to second. Semeniuk drove home the first run of the game with a single to center field, scoring Lubanski and moving Blair to second base. A wild pitch moved Blair to third to put runners at the corners. Brooks scored Blair on a sacrifice fly to deep right field to put Wake in front 2-0.
Appalachian State got a run back on a solo homer from Faggart to lead off the top of the fourth. The homer for Faggart was his team-leading 13th of the season.
Wake Forest tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of solo homers. Conway led off the inning with a blast over the left-center field wall, his fifth of the season. The homer also extended his hitting streak to 15 straight games. One out later, Lopez also homered over the left-center field fence, his seventh round-tripper of the season.
The Demon Deacons broke the game open with five runs in the home half of the fifth. With one out, Semeniuk reached on an infield single to short and moved to third on a single to right field by Brooks. Brooks advanced to second on a passed ball. A walk to Mike Murray loaded the bases with one out. Semeniuk came into score and the other two runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Conway then doubled down the left-field line to score both Brooks and Murray and make the score 7-1. Williamson was hit by a pitch and Lopez walked to again load the bases. After an infield fly by Lubanski, Rhine lined a single to center to score two runs.
The Deacs plated another run in the bottom of the sixth. Semeniuk led off the inning with a double down the right field. Brooks then walked to put runners at first and second. The next two batters then struck out. Williamson lined a single to the right-center field alley to score Semeniuk for the 10th Wake Forest run of the night.
Appalachian State closed the scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh. Chris Alessandria walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a single by Doug Jones. Hector Crespo walked to load the bases with no outs. Wes Hobson drove in a run on a ground out to third. Faggart then followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jones.
Wake Forest closes the season this weekend with a three-game series against Maryland. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
