Weekly Recap:
The Wake Forest baseball team played just one game last week, falling in a midweek game at Appalachian State, 10-5. The Deacs had the weekend off due to final exams and will not play again until Friday, May 7, at North Carolina.
The Demon Deacons are currently 12-32 on the season and 4-17 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Freshman Pat Blair had a career-high four hits to lead the Deacs against Appalachian State. Blair added an RBI and scored a run in the loss. Blair also recorded his 16th double of the season to move into a tie for third for doubles by a freshman in Wake Forest history. Senior Mike Murray reached base four times in the contest, with three hits and a walk. Murray and had an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman Matt Conway leads Wake Forest on the season with a .340 batting average to go along with two homers and 16 RBIs. Murray is hitting .338 on the year with three homers and a team-leading 37 RBIs. Junior Steven Brooks is batting .327 with five home runs, 27 RBIs and a team-best 22 stolen bases. Redshirt junior Ryan Semeniuk is swinging the bat at a .294 clip, leads the team with eight homers and has driven in 23 runs.
On the mound, redshirt senior Joel Ernst and sophomore Zach White each had a scoreless outing against Appalachian State. Ernst and White each threw a hitless 0.2 of an inning in the game.
Ernst has the lowest earned run average for Wake Forest on the season, compiling a 4.10 ERA with a 1-1 record and two saves in 23 appearances. Freshman Niko Spezial is 1-4 on the year with a 4.24 ERA in nine appearances, including one start, while fellow rookie Justin Van Grouw is 1-3 on the season with a 4.84 ERA in 14 appearances, with seven starts.
Wake Forest returns to ACC play this weekend with three games at North Carolina. Game times against the Tar Heels are set for 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's game will be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Networks, which includes Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports South, Fox Sports Florida and NESN.
