Weekly Recap:
Wake Forest finished the last week of the regular season with a 3-1 record after defeating Appalachian State on Tuesday and taking two of three games from Maryland over the weekend.
The Deacs dispatched of the Mountaineers on Tuesday night, 10-3. After losing the series opener against Maryland 5-1, Wake Forest came back to win the next two games, defeating the Terrapins 13-1 on Friday and 8-7 on Saturday.
Wake Forest finishes the season with an 18-37 overall record and an 8-22 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Deacs won three of their last four conference series, including a series win against eventual Atlantic Division champion Clemson. Wake also closed the year by winning six of its last eight games.
Freshman Matt Conway and Mark Rhine led Wake Forest at the plate last week as each rookie hit above .500 on the week. Conway hit .526 (10-for-19) on the week with two homers and five RBIs. Conway had at least two hits in each game and ended the season on an 18-game hitting streak, the longest active hitting streak in the ACC. Conway finished the season with a .381 batting average, the top average among freshmen in the league and third overall in the ACC. Rhine hit .533 (8-for-15) over the past week with four RBIs. Rhine had at least one hit in every game to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
Steven Brooks went 5-for-13 (.385 batting average) over the week with four RBIs. Brooks stretched his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games and finished his junior season with a .349 batting average, six homers, 39 RBIs and a team-best 23 stolen base. Ryan Semeniuk hit .353 last week with four RBIs, while Mike Murray hit .313 with two homers and a team-high six RBIs. Semeniuk finished the season with a .282 batting average, a team-high eight homers and 31 RBIs. Murray posted a .345 batting average in 2010 with a team-high 53 RBIs and six homers.
Mike Lubanski went 3-for-7 with an RBI last week. Ryan Lloyd had just one at bat last week, but it was a big one, as his walk-off double lifted the Deacs to a season-ending, 8-7 win over Maryland on Saturday.
The Deacs continued to get solid pitching on the mound last week. Michael Dimock turned in an outstanding start in a win on Friday. Dimock allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out six over 7.0 innings. After allowing a run in the second inning, Dimock retired 12 straight batters and finished the game by sitting down 16 of the last 18 batters he faced. Austin Stadler closed the season with a solid start, but took the loss on Thursday. Stadler gave up five runs, just three earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Zach White turned in another good start in Tuesday's game against Appalachian State. White earned the win against the Mountaineers after allowing just one run on five hits over 5.0 innings.
All four senior pitchers threw in the season finale on Saturday. Joel Ernst earned the win in his final collegiate game, throwing a scoreless ninth inning. Brandon Johnson got the start on Saturday and allowed a run on a hit with a strikeout over 2.0 innings. Ryan Bouton tossed two shutout innings on Saturday, while Alex Wiesner allowed six runs, only three earned, with two strikeouts over 2.0 innings.
Four Wake Forest freshmen also had a good week on the mound, not allowing a run. Tim Cooney, Niko Spezial and Justin Van Grouw each pitched two or more innings and did not allow a run. Conway threw a perfect inning in relief with a strikeout.
Ernst finished the season with the best ERA on the team, posting a 2-1 record with two saves and a 3.73 ERA. Spezial closed his rookie year with a 1-4 record and a 4.43 ERA. Van Grouw had a 1-4 record with a 5.18 ERA in 2010, while Stadler went 3-4 on the season with a 5.26 ERA. Cooney had a 5.49 ERA with a 4-6 record on the season.
