ATHENS, Ga. - Martina Pavelec's sophomore season came to a close Wednesday as she fell in three sets to Kristi Boxx of Ole Miss in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Pavelec took the first set in a tiebreak, but Boxx battled back to win the match 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 and will face Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling in the second round.
Pavelec finishes the season with an overall singles record of 15-10 and was the first Deacon to play in the NCAA Singles Championship since Alex Hirsch competed in 2007. The Stuttgart, Germany native was the recipient of the 2010 ITA Player to Watch Award for the Carolina Region and is expected to be a major contributor on next year's team.
Demon Deacon teammates Sasha Kulikova and Kathryn Talbert will have an opportunity to avenge Pavelec's loss when they take on Boxx and her partner Karen Nijssen in first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Thursday.
