WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The No. 9-ranked Wake Forest women's golf team will be looking to advance to its 13th NCAA Championship this weekend as it travels to the NCAA East Regional at the Ironwood Country Club in Greenville, NC.
The 54-hole event begins on Thursday morning and the final round will conclude on Saturday afternoon. The top-8 teams in the 24-team field along with the top-2 individuals not on the eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championships which are scheduled for May 18-22, at the Landfall Country Club in Wilmington, NC.
The Demon Deacons are coming off a second-straight ACC Championship and are looking to keep the momentum rolling.
"We're really looking forward to getting back on the course and playing again," said Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey. "The students put a lot of focus this past week into final exams so now that those are done, I know they're ready to get going again."
Wake Forest's lineup this week will feature the same group that won the ACC title two weeks ago. Freshman ACC Champion Michelle Shin will head-up the lineup followed by sophomore Cheyenne Woods, senior Dolores White and juniors Natalie Sheary and Allie Bodemann.
Shin and Woods are both playing their best golf of the season and were named to the All-ACC team earlier this week. Shin is coming off a victory at the ACC Championships where she birdied three of the final four holes to claim a one-shot win. For the year, she is averaging 74.4 strokes per round which is second-best on the team. Woods has finished outside of the top-12 just once this spring and is averaging a team-best 73.5 this season. Both players have played five out of their last six rounds at par or better.
Sheary and Bodemann will each be playing in their third NCAA Regional this weekend. Sheary finished tied for 20th as a freshman in 2008 and opened with a round of 70 last year en route to finishing tied for 27th. Bodemann posted a 75 in the second round of the regionals as a freshman and then finished tied for 20th as a sophomore a year ago.
This will be the first NCAA Regional for White. She also played in her first ACC Championship last month and all three of her rounds counted towards the team score. White is averaging 75.2 strokes per round this year which is more than a stroke lower than her average last season.
Wake comes into the tournament as the No. 3-seed in a very strong field that features No. 1-seed Duke and No. 2-seed Auburn. The Deacons have had success as of late and a key reason for that has been a strong opening round.
"With such a strong field, it will be very important to get off to a good start," said Dailey. "That's something we've been able to do each of the last two events and we've had two pretty good tournaments. We know we need to play three good rounds this weekend and the students are looking forward to the challenge."
The Deacs had averaged 303.28 strokes per round in the opening round of the first seven events this season. But they carded a 289 in the opening round at the Bryan National and finished second and then opened with a 286 at the ACC Championship on their way to a 4-shot victory.
The Demon Deacons have gone head-to-head this season with 14 of the 23 other teams in the field this week. Wake is a combined 30-16 against those 14 teams. Against the other top-10 seeded teams, the Deacs hold a perfect 3-0 mark over No. 7 Florida and are 5-1 against No. 9 North Carolina. Wake is 3-1 against No. 10 South Carolina, 2-1 against both No. 5 Vanderbilt and No. 8 TCU while splitting a pair of meetings with No. 4 Pepperdine. Against the top-2 seeds, the Deacs are 3-8 but have beaten No. 1 Duke each of the last two meetings and topped No. 2 Auburn at the Bryan National.
The forecast calls for a warm weekend in Greenville with temperatures expected to climb to around 90 degrees on both Thursday and Friday. A chance a rain creeps into the forecast on Saturday with temperatures around 80 degrees.
