GREENVILLE, NC - The No. 9 Wake Forest women's golf team opened the NCAA East Regional at the Ironwood Country Club on Thursday with a tough round of 8-over 296 and are in 16th place. Four Demon Deacons posted first round 74s.

On a perfect day for scoring, the Deacs struggled to find many birdies while nine of the 24 teams broke par and a total of 42 players were at par or better.

No. 2-seed Auburn had four players shoot an under par round and the Tigers have a one-shot lead after an opening round 8-under 280. Individually, East Tennessee State's Nina Muehl fired a bogey-free 8-under 64 and has a 3-shot lead on three players at 5-under par.

Wake will start the second round in 16th place at 8-over. Tulane, East Tennessee State and Texas Tech all shot a 3-under 285 and are tied for sixth. The top-8 teams at the end of play on Saturday will earn a spot in the NCAA Championships in Wilmington, NC, on May 18-22.

Senior Dolores White, junior Natalie Sheary, sophomore Cheyenne Woods and freshman Michelle Shin all carded rounds of 2-over 74 on Thursday to make-up the Demon Deacons' round of 296.

Sheary made 16-straight pars to open her round before finishing with a pair of bogeys while Woods also made 16 pars and two bogeys in her round of 74. Woods made one bogey and eight pars on each nine.

White made three-straight bogeys on holes 3-5 but climbed back to 1-over for the day after birdies at Nos. 7 and 10. The Lakeland, Fla., native would the finish her day with seven pars and one more bogey to post the Deacons' third round of 74.

Shin started her day with a bogey at No. 1 and then a birdie at No. 9 to make the turn at even-par. She eventually dropped to 3-over for the round after three bogeys to start the back nine but the ACC Individual Champion made a nice birdie-two at No. 17 to finish with a 74.

The four players are all tied for 54th with two rounds to play.

Junior Allie Bodemann got off to a tough start on Thursday and wound up with an opening round 85.

Wake will start the second round at 1:26 pm Friday afternoon off the tenth tee and will again be paired with Duke and Auburn. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of each of the final two rounds.
