EUGENE, Ore. - The Wake Forest men's 4x400m relay team put forth a solid effort Thursday evening in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships at the historic Hayward Field but it came up short of advancing to Saturday's finals.

The team of seniors Tyler Dodds, Brent LaRue, Jon Reid and junior Allan Lunkenheimer finished sixth in a quick first heat with a time of 3:08.78. Mississippi State won the heat with a time of 3:04.70, which was very good on a rainy evening.

Dodds started the race for the Deacs and ran a solid opening leg before yielding to LaRue. The 400m hurdle school-record holder took the baton and ran a good lap but was unable to make up much ground on the leaders.

Lunkenheimer then ran a very good leg and pulled the Deacs into fifth as he handed-off to Reid for the anchor. Reid also ran a strong lap but Tavaris Tate of Mississippi State and Joel Phillip of Arizona State were too strong and would not give any ground, snagging to two qualifying spots from the heat.

The quartet qualified for the NCAA Quarterfinals by finishing second at the Auburn Tiger Classic back in April with a time of 3:08.48. Then in the quarterfinals on May 29, in Greensboro, the team ran a season-best 3:06.81 to earn its trip to Eugene.

The race Thursday evening also concluded the 2009-10 Wake Forest athletic season.
