WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Senior Brent LaRue put a cap on his stellar career Tuesday, earning U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-American honors. LaRue earned the award by finishing as one of the top-8 Americans in the 400m hurdles as last week's NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
LaRue ran a school-record 50.20 in the semifinals of the 400m hurdles last Wednesday but came up just one-spot shy of advancing to the finals. That was the third time this season that he broke the school-record. He bettered Phillip Warsaw's mark of 51.60 with a time of 50.60 at the Auburn Tiger Classic in early April and then qualified for Eugene when he ran a 50.29 en route to winning his heat of the NCAA Quarterfinals.
The All-America honor is a great end to what was a stellar senior season for the Kernersville, NC, native. During the indoor portion, LaRue set the indoor pole vault record three different times and finished fifth in the heptathlon at the ACC Championships.
After injuring his elbow early in the outdoor season, LaRue turned his focus to the 400m hurdles. He competed in the 400m hurdles at a total of eight meets this spring and finished lower than fifth just once. He also won the ACC Title in the event which was the second individual ACC crown of his career.
This is the second All-America honors of LaRue's career as well as he also took home the award in the indoor heptathlon in 2009. In all, LaRue claimed four ACC titles, was a two-time All-American and a seven-time All-ACC performer. He currently holds a total of five school records.
LaRue will now head to Europe in hopes of continuing his running career professionally. He and his fiancé Ana Jerman, a former WFU tennis player, plan to live in Slovenia where LaRue will train and compete with the hope of earning a spot on the Slovenia national team for the 2012 Olympics in London.
