Garcia and Puerto Rico Advance To Semifinals of Centrobasket Championship

PUERTO RICO - Wake Forest's Sandra Garcia scored 27 points over three group-play games and helped lead host Puerto Rico to the semifinals of the 2010 Centrobasket Championship for Women.
The semifinals, which are being played at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, will begin Tuesday evening and the finals set for Wednesday. Puerto Rico will play Mexico in one semifinal game and Jamaica will take on Trinidad and Tobago in the other semifinal matchup.
Puerto Rico opened the tournament on Saturday evening with a 69-50 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. Garcia played 17 minutes in the opening game, scoring eight points, grabbing five rebounds and recording one of the team's four blocked shots.
In the second game on Sunday, Garcia scored 15 points in just 13 minutes against an overmatched St. Vincent and the Grenadines squad. Puerto Rico used a 22-0 run late in the first quarter to pull away and never look back in a 130-32 victory. Garcia also added three rebounds and two assists in the win.
On Monday, Puerto Rico wrapped-up the group title as it dominated Guatemala in the first half, taking a 48-13 lead at the break. Garcia played just six minutes in the game, which eventually finished 87-53 in favor of Puerto Rico. She scored four points and pulled down three rebounds.
Jamaica was the other group winner with a perfect 3-0 mark. Mexico was the runner-up in that group with its only loss coming to Jamaica 78-73 on the second day.
