WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team was well-represented in the ITA preseason rankings released on Friday, with Tripper Carleton, Iain Atkinson and Jonathan Wolff making the list of top national singles players, and the team of Atkinson and Wolff coming in at No. 32 in the initial doubles rankings.
Carleton leads the Deacons with a No. 36 singles ranking, Atkinson was ranked 68th and Wolff was close behind at No. 81.
Now entering his sophomore season, Carleton will be expected to continue the success he had as a freshman in 2010, when he was named to the All-ACC squad while amassing a 14-11 record, which included five wins over nationally ranked opponents. Carleton was the first freshman in Wake Forest history to receive a bid to the NCAA Singles Championships.
Atkinson also had an outstanding year for the Deacons in 2009, posting a 22-16 singles record and a 28-12 doubles ledger. The Washington, England native received doubles All-America honors last season after reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships with former partner Steven Forman.
Wolff has been one of Wake's most consistent winners over his first three seasons, notching a 50-23 career singles record, including a 17-7 mark in 2009-10. The senior is also a two-time member of the All-ACC Academic team.
The Deacons kick off the 2009-10 season this weekend at the UVA Classic in Charlottesville, Va. Results will be updated daily on WakeForestSports.com.
