The NCAA Fall Preview, which usually features one of the toughest fields all year, will not disappoint this season. Sixteen of the top-17 ranked teams in the country are in the field and all 18 teams are ranked in the top-31. The Traditions Club, which is the site of the 2011 NCAA Women's Golf Championship, will measure 6,217 yards and play to a par 72 this week.
Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey, who is entering her 23rd season, will have a mixed lineup of youth and experience this week. All-Americans Natalie Sheary, Cheyenne Woods and Michelle Shin will be joined by Hunter Ross and Olafia Kristinsdottir, who are both making their Demon Deacon debuts.
Ross is a junior transfer from NC State where she played in three tournaments as a freshman in 2008-09. She was with the Deacons last season but had to sit out the year. Kristinsdottir is a freshman from Reykjavik, Iceland. She has played in a number of international events and was named the Most Talented Icelandic Female Golfer in 2009.
Sheary is coming off a strong summer that saw her blow away the field at the Connecticut Women's Open and advance to match play at the US Women's Amateur for the third-straight year. Woods and Shin also had good summers as the duo won the inaugural Hooters Women's Team Championship last month, besting over 50 other collegiate teams.
The Deacons are the No. 8-ranked team in the NGCA/Gold World preseason poll. The other top-10 teams that are in the field are Southern Cal (No. 1), UCLA (No. 2), Purdue (No. 3), Alabama (No. 4), Duke (No. 5), Auburn (No. 6), Virginia (No. 9) and Vanderbilt (No. 10).
The 54-hole event will begin on Monday morning with tee times starting at 8 am CT. The second round will be on Tuesday, Sept. 14, and the final round will be played on Wednesday, Sept. 15.
Golfstat.com will provide live scoring for all three rounds of the event. The weather forecast calls for temperatures around 90 degrees with a slight chance of an afternoon thunderstorm on Monday and Tuesday.
