WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's 31-game regular season schedule was released by the Atlantic Coast Conference office on Thursday afternoon. The Demon Deacons will begin the Jeff Bzdelik Era on Friday, Nov. 12, against Stetson at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
In all, Wake Forest will play 17 games at the Joel Coliseum, and the Deacons will play in the NIT Season Tip-Off for the first time since the 2004-05 campaign.
In its first season under new head coach Bzdelik, Wake Forest will face 12 teams that participated in postseason play in 2009-10, including eight that made the NCAA Tournament.
Wake Forest will appear on television 25 times, including all but one ACC contest. The Deacons will play in front of a national television audience 10 times, including nine games on the ESPN family of networks. Two game times and television assignments have yet to be released, pending the Atlantic 10 Conference basketball schedule announcement.
The Deacs will play two regular season games at the Greensboro Coliseum in preparation for the 2011 ACC Tournament, which will be held at the venue. Wake Forest will face Elon in Greensboro on Nov. 20 and then play UNC Wilmington at the Coliseum on Dec. 12.
Wake Forest opens the season by hosting Atlantic Sun foe Stetson on Friday Nov. 12. The Deacons and Hatters have met three times previously with Wake winning all three meetings.
The Deacons will then host the four-team East Regional of the NIT Season Tip-Off on Nov. 15-16. Wake will open against Hampton and then play either VCU or Winthrop.
If Wake Forest is able to advance out of its pod, the Deacons would play at Madison Square Garden the following week in New York City. If not, the Deacs would then host a four-team consolation pod the following week in Winston-Salem, bringing the season's home game total to 19.
Between the two rounds of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Wake Forest will meet up with area-rival Elon for a game at the Greensboro Coliseum on Nov. 20. Wake went 2-0 in regular season games in Greensboro last season.
The Deacons close the month of November by facing Iowa in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Wake is 3-0 all-time against the Hawkeyes, defeating Iowa in the 2008 Challenge in Iowa City.
Wake Forest opens the month of December against Holy Cross on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Joel Coliseum. The teams have met three times previously, with the Deacons leading 2-1. Wake and Holy Cross first met in 1912 and then again in the East Regional semifinals of the 1953 NCAA Tournament. The teams last met during the 1959-60 season at the Dixie Classic in Raleigh.
After breaking for final exams, the Deacons will play back-to-back games against in-state foes UNC Wilmington and UNC Greensboro. Wake will face UNCW on Dec. 12 in Greensboro. The Deacs will host UNCG on Dec. 15.
Wake Forest will then head to Cincinnati to face Xavier in the second annual Skip Prosser Classic on Sunday, Dec. 18. The Deacons defeated the Musketeers in double overtime in last season's inaugural game in Winston-Salem.
The Deacs will play once more before Christmas, hosting Presbyterian on Dec. 21. Wake last hosted the Blue Hose during the 2007-08 season.
Following a week-long break for the Christmas holiday, Wake Forest will travel to Richmond to take on the Spiders at the Robins Center on Dec. 29. The Deacons picked up a win in Richmond during the 2008-09 campaign.
Wake Forest will ring in the New Year by hosting Gonzaga on Jan. 2. The Bulldogs will be making a return trip after the Deacons posted a 77-75 win at The Kennel in Spokane last season.
Wake will wrap up non-conference play by hosting Triad-rival High Point on Jan. 5. This will mark the second straight season the two area schools have met on the hardwood.
In conference play, the Deacons will play home-and-home series with Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, NC State and Virginia Tech. Wake Forest will host Duke, Miami and Virginia and play at Boston College, Clemson and North Carolina.
The Deacons begin ACC play on Jan. 8 at NC State, marking the second year in a row Wake opens conference play against the Wolfpack. The Deacons will play six conference games in January with road dates against NC State (Jan. 8), Virginia Tech (Jan. 15) and Georgia Tech (Jan. 19).
Wake Forest will host Maryland (Jan. 12), Duke (Jan. 22) and Virginia (Jan. 29) in January.
