WINSTON-SALEM, N.C - The Wake Forest women's tennis team has one new member as Brigita Bercyte has joined the squad for the 2011 dual match season, as announced Tuesday by head coach Jeff Wyshner.
Bercyte comes to Wake Forest from Brooklyn, N.Y. and has experience playing high-level tennis, having competed extensively on the ITF Junior Circuit. Last fall, she won the doubles title at an ITF tournament in Puerto Rico and finished as the runner-up in singles at an ITF event in the Dominican Republic.
"Brigita should have an immediate impact on our success this spring," said Wyshner. "She immediately brings an energetic and aggressive style of play to our doubles line-up."
"While it will be a little tougher for her to jump from competing with juniors to playing collegiate players who may be three or four years older than her, she is so athletic, hits the ball beautifully and has a very high tennis IQ, that I am confident that she will make that adjustment quickly. She is very much the passionate, dedicated and talented student-athlete that we want to be a part of the tennis program here at Wake."
Bercyte graduated from high school last spring and was initially planning on taking a year off to improve her tennis, before deciding to join the Demon Deacons in January.
"I was very fortunate to find Brigita playing at the Eddie Herr this past November," said Wyshner. "One of her greatest strengths is her 100 percent commitment to improving her game, and that is why she was taking a year off after graduating last spring. Fortunately, she was willing to adjust her plans and join us this January instead."
Bercyte was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, but moved to the United States with her family when she was 11 years old.
