WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team will play a pair of home matches this weekend as the Deacs take on No. 30 Virginia on Saturday before facing East Tennessee State on Sunday. Both matches will begin at noon at the Indoor Tennis Center.
The No. 52 Demon Deacons (1-0) started their season off on the right foot last weekend as they cruised past No. 65 Winthrop 6-1.
Wake Forest swept the doubles point as the 14th-ranked doubles team of Kayla Duncan and Kathryn Talbert earned an 8-5 victory over a solid duo of No. 87 Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli, and freshman Brigita Bercyte made her collegiate debut, teaming with Martina Pavelec to post a dominating 8-0 win at the No. 3 position.
No. 62 Pavelec, Duncan, Talbert and Emilee Malvehy all scored victories in both singles and doubles, with Talbert winning the clinching singles match at the No. 2 slot.
This weekend's match against the Cavaliers is a rare non-conference tilt between two Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. The two teams will meet again in Charlottesville, Va. on April 9 in a match that will count in the ACC standings.
Virginia enters the match with a 2-0 record, having posted 7-0 wins over Brown and Richmond. The Hoos boast five ranked singles players, led by No. 29 Erin Vierra, and two ranked doubles teams, highlighted by No. 10 Emily Fraser and Hana Tomljanovic.
ETSU opened its season last weekend with a 7-0 win over Milligan. The Bucs will take on Eastern Kentucky on Friday before coming to Winston-Salem to face the Demon Deacons on Sunday.
The Bucs have won the last two Atlantic Sun regular season titles and were again picked to finish first in the conference this year.
