Multi-Event Athletes Enjoy Success at JRF Combined Events

CLEMSON, S.C. - Four Wake Forest multi-event track and field athletes competed in the JRF Combined Events/Invitational Friday afternoon on the campus of Clemson University.
Sophomore Maddy Ricco and freshman Erika Martin represented the Deacs in the pentathlon on the women's side, while juniors Alex Hill and Scott McCullough competed in the men's heptathlon.
The men completed four of seven events on Friday evening, and the remaining three will be completed Saturday afternoon. The 60 meter hurdles will begin at noon, followed by the 1,000 meter run and the pole vault.
Following is an event-by-event breakdown for both the pentathlon and heptathlon on the first day of the JRF Combined Events/Invitational:
Pentathlon:
Erika Martin earned three top-five finishes among the five events, including a first place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.61 meters. She placed third in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 9.13 and fourth in the 800 meter run, crossing the line in 2:30.82. Martin placed seventh in the long jump with a mark of 5.00 meters, and she threw for a distance of 8.21 meters in the shot put to finish in tenth place.
Maddy Ricco turned in two top-five finishes, including a second place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:29.11. Her mark of 9.68 meters in the shot put placed her fourth, and she jumped 5.12 meters to take sixth in the long jump. Ricco finished 12th in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 9.53 seconds and 13th in the high jump with a mark of 1.40 meters.
Heptathlon:
Alex Hill finished third in the shot put with a mark of 12.43 meters, along with a time of 7.28 in the 60 meter dash to place fifth. He finished tied for seventh in the long jump with a mark of 6.22 meters, and he placed eighth in the high jump by clearing a height of 1.83 meters.
McCullough also performed well for the Deacs on the day, finishing seventh in the high jump with a mark of 1.86 meters. He placed ninth in the long jump with a distance of 6.21 meters, and then finished 12th in the shot put by throwing for a distance of 9.57 meters. McCullough also placed 12th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.56.
