WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team earned its first shutout of the season, knocking off East Tennessee State 7-0 Sunday at the Indoor Tennis Center.
The Demon Deacons improve to 2-1 on the year, while ETSU falls to 2-1.
"It was a good win for us," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "They are a team that broke into the national rankings last year and will be on that edge against this year. It was a critical match for us because when you beat top 100 teams, you get extra points for that."
Kayla Duncan, Martina Pavelec, Anna Mydlowska and Brigita Bercyte all won both singles and doubles matches on the day for the Deacs.
The Deacons took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. At the top slot, the 83rd-ranked team of Duncan and Pavelec cruised past Paula Jaime and Karina Kedzo 8-1. Mydlowska and Bercyte clinched the point with an 8-2 win over Giulia Andreazza and Marine Wieliczko at No. 3.
"(Winning the doubles point) was critical today," said Wyshner. "When you have an opponent coming in that wants to get you but maybe doesn't quite know how they are going to match up, you have to get that momentum early to say, `Hey, this is our house, and you're not going to pick us off today.'"
62nd-ranked Pavelec extended the Deacon lead to 2-0 with an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jaime at the top singles position.
"Martina is one of the best players in the country, and as she plays more matches, she's getting sharper and sharper," said Wyshner. "It's really fun to watch her play."
Emilee Malvehy was close behind, rounding out an impressive weekend with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Marine Wieliczko at No. 3 singles.
"Emilee had one of the best weekends that any player could have," said Wyshner. "We'll nominate her for ACC Player of the Week after she beat the 29th-ranked singles player and 16th-ranked doubles team (against Virginia Saturday), and she did a good job today too.
Duncan clinched the overall win for Wake Forest rallying from deficits in both sets for a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Kelly Holtzhausen at No. 2. Ryann Cutillo added to the Deacon lead, taking down Kedzo 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4.
At No. 5 singles Mydlowska overcame a 3-0 deficit in the second set, winning the next six games to defeat Diana Navrostska 7-6 (6), 6-3. Making her collegiate singles debut, Bercyte ground out a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win over Andra Voinea at the No. 6 position.
Wake Forest will return to action next weekend with a marquee non-conference matchup with No. 4 Notre Dame. The Demon Deacons and the Fighting Irish will face off on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Indoor Tennis Center.
