PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Wake Forest sophomore Evan Beck shot rounds of 71 and 70 on Monday to lead the Demon Deacons on the opening day of the JU Invitational at the famed TPC of Sawgrass Stadium course.
As a team, Wake Forest carded rounds of 301 and 296 and is currently fifth in the 15-team field through 36 holes.
"We just didn't score the ball well today," said Wake Forest head coach Jerry Haas. "We had a lot of little mistakes that added up. Fortunately, they are all correctable so we need to come out tomorrow and focus like we did in the fall and I think we can move up a couple of spots."
Beck started his day with a bang, eagling the par-5 ninth to quickly get to 2-under par. His lone bogey on the back nine came at the famous par-3 17th and he would make the turn in 1-under par. He then played the last eight holes at even-par to post an opening round of 1-under 71.
The ninth hole wasn't as kind to the Virginia Beach, Va., native in the afternoon round as he started with a bogey-six. But he rebounded with birdies on the two par-5s on the back nine to again make the turn in 1-under. After five pars to start the front nine, Beck birdied No. 6 to climb to 3-under for the day and that's where he would finish. He will start the final round in second place.
Florida's top-ranked Bank Vongvanij fired a pair of 3-under 69s and leads Beck by three shots in the individual race. Vongvanij was one of three Gators under-par for the 36-holes and as a result, Florida holds a large lead in the team competition. UF shot rounds of 286 and 283 to lead North Florida by 17-shots at 7-under par.
Junior All-American Lee Bedford started his day with a flourish, making birdie on three of his first four holes. But the momentum didn't last and would eventually finish with a round of 4-over 76. He then made a total of five birdies in his afternoon round and would post an even-par 72. Bedford is currently tied for 16th at 4-over par.
Sophomore Charlie Harrison made a pair of birdies in his morning round of 4-over 76 and would then go on to post a 5-over 77 in the afternoon. He starts the final round in a tie for 33rd at 9-over par.
Freshmen John Varol and Beau Cutts rounded out the Deacon-five on Monday. Varol carded rounds of 81-77 to finish at 14-over while Cutts posted scores of 78-81 to finish at 15-over.
The Deacons will start the final round Tuesday morning at 10:48 a.m. off the 10th tee and will be paired with Jacksonville State and Mercer. Golfstat.com will have live scoring of the entire final round.
