WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior middle blocker Andrea Beck and freshman setter Danae Rosendall both turned in excellent performances to help Wake Forest snap a seven-match losing streak and sweep Maryland on Friday evening at Reynolds Gym.
The win puts the Demon Deacons at 5-12 overall and 2-6 in the ACC, while the Terrapins are now 9-11 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Wake Forest took the match 25-18, 29-27, 25-20.
Rosendall ended the match with 42 assists, which is her fifth-highest total of the season and the most assists she has had in a three-set match. Her previous high in a three-setter was 29 against North Florida on September 4.
Her favorite target on the night was Beck, who led all players by tying a season-high with 15 kills. She only needed 22 swings to record that kill total, as she ended the match with a .591 hitting percentage.
Freshman Dani Thompson also had a solid match in the back row with a team-leading 17 digs. She also led the team with two aces and kept Maryland out of system for most of the night when she was behind the service line.
Two other Deacons also reached the double-digit dig total, as senior Kadija Fornah turned in 11 and freshman Jazmen Russell had 10.
Fornah was just one kill away from recording another double-double with nine, as fellow senior Carlin Salmon also had nine kills out of the middle. Salmon also added four blocks on the night, including a pair of solo blocks.
The Deacs used strong serving in the first set to help take an early lead in the match. Fornah, Beck and Thompson all had an ace in Set 1, while Beck also had four kills on six swings without committing an error. Maryland also struggled on offense in the first set with seven kills and seven errors.
Wake Forest had its highest kill total in Set 2 with 17, as Rosendall assisted on every one. Beck reached five kills in the second set, while Salmon had four kills and four blocks.
The Demon Deacons needed the high kill total, though, as Set 2 went down to the wire. After each team went on some early runs, the set was tied at 14-14 and neither team went up by more than two points the rest of the way.
Wake Forest had set point at 24-23 and at 25-24, but serving errors on both occasions prolonged the set. Each team traded side outs until 27-27 when sophomore Kristin Grissom and Fornah smacked back-to-back kills and gave the Deacs a 2-0 advantage.
Beck saved her best for the last set, recording six kills on just seven attempts to help seal the victory. Russell also had an error-free third set with three kills on four attempts.
Maryland led early in Set 3 at 10-7, but a 6-1 run gave Wake Forest a 13-11 advantage. The Deacs and the Terps battled through the middle of the set, as Maryland held the lead as late as 18-17. Wake Forest went on an 8-2 run, though, to finish the set and earn the sweep.
The Demon Deacons will be back in action tomorrow when they host Boston College at 5 p.m. at Reynolds Gym. Admission for all spectators will be free.
