BLACKSBURG, Va. - For the second consecutive match, the Wake Forest volleyball team fell in five sets, as Virginia Tech defeated the Demon Deacons Thursday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
With Wake Forest leading two sets to one, the Hokies rallied to capture Set 4 25-17 and Set 5 15-7. The victory moves Virginia Tech's record to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in the ACC, while Wake Forest is now 4-11 and 1-5 in conference play. Virginia Tech won 27-25, 20-25, 24-26, 25-17, 15-7.
The Demon Deacons were led on offense by the trio of seniors Kadija Fornah and Carlin Salmon and junior Andrea Beck. Fornah led the way with 17 kills, Salmon added 16 kills and Beck turned in 15 kills.
Fornah also recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 17 digs. Beck's 15 kills were a season-high, while Salmon added seven total blocks.
Three other Deacs also had career-best performances against the Hokies. Freshman setter Danae Rosendall's 50 assists, freshman libero Dani Thompson's 29 digs and sophomore right side hitter Kristin Grissom's seven total blocks were all new personal bests.
Virginia Tech also had three players eclipse the 10-kill mark. Justine Record had led the way with 19 kills and 21 digs, while Cara Baarendse had 15 kills and Jennifer Wiker had 14 kills.
Set 1 seemed to foreshadow how tight the match would be throughout. Despite an early 13-7 deficit, the Demon Deacons battled back instantly and scored six straight points to tie the set at 13-13. Each team would side out over the next several points until Virginia Tech finally scored a point off serve to make the score 21-19.
Wake Forest would again battle back and tie the set at 24-24, but after alternating kills, Virginia Tech scored two in a row to take the early 1-0 lead.
The Deacs started strong in Set 2 and Virginia Tech's last lead in the set came at 2-1. Wake Forest would see an early four-point cushion at 7-3 evaporate, but the Deacs closed the set on a 6-2 run to tie the match at 1-1.
Virginia Tech controlled the vast majority of Set 3 and appeared to be heading to a 2-1 lead. The Hokies forced Wake Forest to call its final timeout of the set with a 20-15 lead, but the Deacs went on a 7-2 run to tie the set at 22-22. The Hokies committed three service errors during the run to help out Wake, as Fornah and Salmon both provided kills as well.
VT scored the next point to make the score 23-22, but back-to-back Hokie errors gave Wake the lead. After a kill by Record tied the score at 24-24, Salmon and Russell ended the set with consecutive kills.
With the Deacons up 2-1, Virginia Tech did not panic and got off to early starts in both Sets 4 and 5, allowing the Hokies to cruise the final two sets and capture the come-from-behind win.
Wake Forest will be in action tomorrow when the team travels to Charlottesville, Va. to take on Virginia at 7 p.m.
