CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Wake Forest captured the first set from Virginia 25-21, but the Cavaliers rebounded to take the next three sets and defeat the Demon Deacons Saturday night at Memorial Gym.
Wake Forest has now dropped seven straight and is 4-12 overall and 1-6 in the ACC. Virginia improves to 7-9 (1-5 ACC). The Cavaliers took the match 21-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20.
The Demon Deacons got excellent offensive performances from their middle blockers, Andrea Beck and Carlin Salmon. Beck had 14 kills and a .423 hitting percentage, while Salmon had 12 kills and a .647 hitting percentage.
The middles were also involved in all of the Deacs' nine team blocks, as Beck had five block assists and Salmon had four block assists.

Four Cavaliers had 11 or more kills, as outside hitter Simone Asque led the way with a match-high 22 kills and a .378 hitting percentage.
Virginia had a late lead in Set 1 at 19-18, but the Deacs got three points in a row after a kill by Salmon, a Cavalier error and an ace by Thompson. Wake gave up two straight points and the set was tied at 21-21, but four straight by the Deacs helped the team secure the first set. Consecutive kills from Jazmen Russell, Rosendall and Beck gave the Demon Deacons set point, and Russell and Beck finished it with a block.
The Cavaliers captured Set 2 easily before Set 3 came down to the wire as well. With the score at 20-20, Virginia closed on a 5-1 run and went up in the match 2-1.
Virginia then took control midway through Set 4 with leads of 13-8 and 17-10, forcing the Demon Deacons to take timeouts on both occasions. Wake Forest outscored Virginia 8-5 down the stretch, but the Cavaliers were too far out of reach.
The Demon Deacons will return home for four straight matches, beginning with Maryland on Friday at 7 p.m. Wake Forest will host Boston College at 5 p.m. the next day, before welcoming in-state rivals NC State and North Carolina the following week.
