WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest track and field teams will open their season Friday afternoon when they travel to Lynchburg, Va. for the Liberty Kickoff. Hosted by Liberty University, all events will take place at the Tolsma Indoor Track Complex.
Heptathlon and pentathlon events will begin on Friday afternoon, along with women's pole vault, women's weight throw, the 4x800-meter relay, and the 5,000-meter run.
Competing in the sprint events for the women's squad will be Mytoia Gathings, Anneve Waithe, Myesha Barr, and newcomer Brianna Dekine. Caitlin Hartnett and Molly Binder will compete in the mid-distance 1,000-meter run, while freshman Montasia Golden is set to make her collegiate debut in the 60-meter hurdles.
The Deacs will race two 4x400-meter relays, with Barr, Dekine, Gathings, and Waithe representing the "A" team. The "B" team includes Golden, Binder, Phoebe Kershaw, and Erika Martin.
A number of Deacs will compete in the field events, with freshman Nyki Caldwell looking to make an immediate impact in the high jump. School record-holder Erin Brooks will compete in the triple jump, along with Kershaw and Golden.
Martin and fellow sophomore Julie McCauley will represent Wake Forest in the multi-events, just as they did last season.
On the men's side, Michael Mastanduno will compete in the 60-meter dash, while Malcolm Nunley, Kevin Smith, and freshman Daniel Harrison will race in the 400-meters. Sean Lunkenheimer, Kyle Eager, and Michael McEnany will take to the track for the 1,000-meters.
Nunley and his older brother, Booker, will race together in the 60-meter hurdles, along with freshman Lucas Hoffmann.
Like the women, the men will also race two 4x400-meter relay teams. Harrison, Smith, and Malcolm and Booker Nunley will make up the "A" team, while the "B" team will include Eager, Lunkenheimer, McEnany, and senior Alex Hill.
In the field events, Mastanduno will compete in the long jump, while the brother duo of Michael and Nate Wooten will compete in the shot put. Hill will be the lone Demon Deacon participating in the heptathlon, which includes the following seven events: long jump, shot put, high jump, 60-meters, 60-meter hurdles, pole vault, and 1,000-meters.
Following the Liberty Kickoff, the Deacs will not return to racing action until January 13 when they travel to Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Invitational. A more detailed preview of the track and field season will be posted at that time.
