Men's Golf Finishes Sixth At JU Invitational

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - The No. 20 Wake Forest men's golf team opened the spring season with a sixth place finish at the JU Invitational. The Deacons finished the 54-hole event, which was played at the famed TPC of Sawgrass Stadium Course, at 30-over par.
Individually, sophomore Evan Beck carded a final round 2-over 74 and finished the tournament tied for fifth at 1-under par. Junior Lee Bedford led the Deacons in the final round with an even-par 72 and he finished tied for 12th at 4-over par.
The Deacons posted a final round 297 which followed opening rounds of 301 and 296 on Monday.
Florida's Bank Vongvanij, the top-ranked player in the country according to Golfstat, backed-up his ranking by winning the event at 5-under par. He helped lead the top-ranked Gators to a run-away victory as Florida posted rounds of 286-283-286 to finish at 6-under par which was 25-shots ahead of runner-up North Florida.
For Beck, the fifth-place finish was his fourth top-5 finish of the year and he has posted 14 of 18 rounds at par or better. Bedford recorded his sixth top-20 finish of the season in seven events.
Freshman Beau Cutts made 12 pars and a pair of birdies in his final round of 3-over 75. He finished the tournament tied with classmate John Varol at 18-over par. Varol carded a final round 76 and both players finished tied for 49th.
Sophomore Charlie Harrison followed-up rounds of 76-77 on Monday with a final round 78 to finish tied for 42nd at 15-over par.
Wake Forest will return to action at the end of February when they travel to Wilmington, NC, for the Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Landfall Country Club. The first two rounds are scheduled for Feb. 28.
